Check Out Kalin Dodson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalin Dodson.

Hi Kalin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been involved with media since I was the anchor for my middle school morning announcements. Mass Communication was my magnet at Deer Park Middle Magnet school and I have been in front of cameras or behind the scenes directing or editing ever since. From vlogging my life on my YouTube channel, to filming skits with my cousins, I’ve always been interested in filmmaking and storytelling. I studied Mass Communication and Film and Media Arts at Towson University and started working in Marketing Communication through various roles since graduation. After seeing how I was able to use my creativity to help other brands and organizations grow, I decided last year that I would use all of the knowledge I’ve gained over the years to start my consulting business and grow my own creative platform.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not! I had no manual to show me the best way to navigate professional creative spaces and had to pivot a lot. Besides my education, I taught myself a lot. I didn’t really have anyone to show me the way because what I do is so niche. One of the biggest struggles I had to face was realizing that I needed to protect myself and my creativity from people who tried to exploit it. I had to remind myself that my creativity is a gift and I have to protect it. It can be very easy for people to know you’re good at something and expect you to produce outcomes like a machine so that it can benefit them. I had to learn that my gift is valuable and it deserves to be treated as such.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m everything! I’m a Baltimore based Creative Director, Creative Strategist, Content Creator, Host, and founder of Kalin Dodson Creative Group (KDCG). At the heart of everything I do is storytelling. I create lifestyle and cultural content for my own platforms, while also helping brands, organizations and other creatives develop the strategy and creative direction behind their content.

One of the things I’m most proud of is building KDCG and giving myself permission to pursue the kind of creative career I’ve always envisioned. I’ve spent years working in marketing, communications, social media, and partnerships, and now I get to bring all of those experiences together through my own company. I’m also proud of the impact I’ve been able to create through social media, including growing an organization’s Instagram audience by more than 300% through strategy and storytelling and winning American Marketing Awards from AMA Baltimore.

I’m probably best known for bringing a very Baltimore perspective to my work. I’m a native Baltimorean, so when I create content about this city, it comes from a genuine place. I love highlighting the people, businesses, food, art, music, history, and experiences that make Baltimore special. I see myself as both a storyteller and a connector between brands and the communities they want to reach. One of the ways I’m doing this on social media is through my series ‘The New,” which I highly recommend everyone checks out!

What sets me apart is that I’m not just a content creator who knows how to make something look good, and I’m not just a marketer who understands analytics. I understand both sides. I can think about the story, the audience, the culture, the platform, and the bigger strategy behind the content. And because I’m a creator myself, I understand what it feels like to actually be in front of the audience.

Ultimately, I want my work to make people feel something, whether that’s pride in Baltimore, curiosity about a brand, or inspired to experience something for themselves. I think that combination of strategy, storytelling, creativity, and genuine community connection is what makes my work uniquely mine.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Trying new things make me happy! I like to call myself a “collector of experiences.” I’m a curious person by nature so I’m always looking for new experiences to give me an adrenaline rush. Whether it’s traveling to a new city, trying a new restaurant or seeing a musical artist live for the first time, trying new things keeps me happy!
