Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonice Moody.
Hi Jonice, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I knew I wanted to be a designer from a very young age. I used to hand sew sheets and towels into dresses, sketch clothes, and have fashion shows whenever I could. Life happened and I put the sewing machine away once I got to high school. It wasn’t until I started blogging in 2015 where the love and passion for fashion started to come front and center. I asked God if this is what He wanted from me, I would need a name. Styles of a Curvy Girl was crystal clear and i ran with it. I used the blog as a way to get my foot into the plus size fashion industry after graduating. It’s led me to so many opportunities and meeting plenty of people. As years went on, I began to notice that a lot of people were coming to me asking where I would get my clothes or if I could guide them to places to shop that cater to them and their curves, I pushed off the thought of opening a boutique for years because it seemed like everybody was selling the same pieces, but the fuel was lit when I was working at a local boutique. I witnessed women force themselves into clothes that weren’t there sizes because it was cute compared to what was offered for them. I hated it so much. So I started to do something about it. One hoodie turned into seven, then came our first collection. it was small but mighty. Then four to five years later, after having a growing community support us, I started to notice the lack again. Quality was not matching the prices and the designs were terrible. I couldn’t force myself to try to make our customers happy with what was offered. I prayed long and hard about what to do next because I knew this wasn’t it. God told me very loud and clear that I needed to tap back into my designer mode. So, naturally I did. We recently relaunched with Cyn, the perfect dress for the cooler nights and holidays to come.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yes and no. Our readers and customers remind us that even when we haven’t been able to restock pieces as quickly as I would like or when I would have writers block, they haven’t budged. Money has found a way to be funny in the most inconvenient ways but it showed me what I can do in the moment with what I have. Whatever may have been thrown our way to try to knock us off course, has honestly just has pointed us in the direction where we needed to be.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In my professional background, I have always found myself in the industry of helping those in need. I’ve been a stylist in multiple boutiques, I have also had several positions where I have worked to help victims of domestic violence, recovering addicts, and those who need emergency housing. I’m most proud of being the person that many people can depend on when they need it the most. I believe that meeting people where they are without judgment sets me apart. I have seen people at their lowest and overtime our relationship in the store or out in everyday life has allowed me to help many people on their own journeys.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Embracing who I am as a Black plus size woman has enlarged my territory. I have started friendships, business deals, and shown up for myself and others by being 100% me.
