Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarahy Figueroa.
Hi Sarahy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a proud first generation Honduran-American. Although I was raised nearly my entire life in Maryland, I still carry my Latina roots deep. I was in the medical field for about 9 years before I switched industries. I’ve had a passion for the beauty industry since I was a little girl. I was always that friend in high school who wanted to do everyone’s makeup (LOL). My passion for skincare came when I was suffering years with cystic acne. If you know, you will literally search for every product ever made hoping for a miracle. I was so scared to let go of my 9-5 and start school again especially at the age of 30 but I was willing to take a risk. I knew from the jump that I wanted to be a solo esthetician. Everyone starts somewhere and I began in my living room from my house. Everything I was learning in school I would come home to practice on anyone I could get my hands on. It was rough!! I am not going to lie! But I definitely always put my business and future dreams in Gods hands. I worked at a spa part-time while still trying to grow my own clientele working from home. A year in from working at home and my part-time, I opened my first suite in a GoPerfect Office suite. My business began to grow and grow. It’s not always a straight line up when you are self-employed. I think no one talks about the struggles. Or the moments you want to almost give up. It takes a lot of discipline and a lot of “idk how ima do it” moments to build a business from scratch. All I can say is God always provides. A year and a half later, I was able to move into my very first studio. Thankfully my clientele has doubled since the move. Kensington has been nothing but great for my business! My passion lies definitely in my acne clients. I resonate with their journey and I want to be able to provide them the security and guidance to clear skin.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I’d be lying if I say so. There was so many struggles from growing clientele, to going days without one client at the beginning, to investing in more education outside of esthetician school to knowing how to make business decisions. I don’t think you realize how much goes into a business until you are there. Earlier this year there was a flood in my suite that was so unexpected and damaged my suite. Those are things you don’t count on but have to be ready for!
We’ve been impressed with SkinOverdose Aesthetics, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I specialize in full body waxing and facials. I enjoy doing Brazilian waxes. It was my first service I offered and I have some girls who have been with me since I began in my living room! I definitely think my passion lies in my acne facials. To help clients feel confident and see their skin get clearer and clearer really holds a special place in my heart. I believe what sets me apart from others is being ethically and results driven. I will not recommend you something just to make money. I want you to cater to your skins needs and goals. You can feel safe knowing I will make recommendations accordingly.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I don’t consider myself a risk taker. But I definitely took a risk moving from my home to my suite. I honestly was driven more by faith than anything else. I wasn’t making enough to pay for a suite but I had my family’s support and I felt like God told me “JUMP, I got you!”. I blindly trusted my faith and my first week in my suite I made rent. Every month came rolling in quickly that I was astonished how my business was growing. Being a business definitely comes with risk taking.
