Rising Stars: Meet William Gingerich and Marcus Munroe of DC & Surrounding Areas

Today we’d like to introduce you to William Gingerich and Marcus Munroe.

Hi Will and Marcus, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi, our names are Will and Marcus. Over 8 years ago, we found each other through the local music scene in the DMV area and became friends over the internet. Both of us thought the other was super talented and inspiring. We sent music back and forth for several years, and eventually made a song together that sat on a hard drive for almost 2 years. One day, we finally decided to meet up and honestly just say what’s up, then the vision for Fortune Favor was born. We both liked what each other did so much, we wanted to take a stab at combining forces. Since then we’ve pushed ourselves to enter every avenue of the scene, connecting with other artists, promoters, managers and building our network while releasing music. We’re excited to say that there are some big tracks coming out soon and collaborations with other artists. We love the community we’ve been building and can’t wait to continue to share our art and create more memories.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This is a layered question for us. The day to day requirements are definitely a constant management game. Working with a partner in any capacity will always bring up challenges. Our’s often revolve around timing and keeping up with the pace we want to work at. We live an hour away from each other and currently both work jobs that often have conflicting schedules. Making time for the project requires constant planning, calendar reminders, agendas and a lot of sacrifice. The communication maintenance takes a lot of effort and intentional direction to be thoughtful of each other.

The best part for us is that when we are actually in the studio making music, the flow state comes pretty naturally. We’ve found a really effective way to work together even in environments with a lot of distractions (our studios are in our homes). We’re both open minded and feel that any idea we have needs to be fully explored before we move on. This really reflects in our production where we feel we get a lot of “range” in energy and feeling.

The one thing that keeps us both aligned is our conviction to make our lives revolve around music. We both have a “by any means” mentality – we’re going to do whatever it takes to make this work. Some of the things we do just to get a few hours of studio time or to film content would make a normal person go crazy. Even one of our upcoming releases (that we’re so excited for) was written in Marcus’s car when he swung by Will’s house after work at like 11pm on a Tuesday. We both know it’s all going to be worth it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Will has musical background from a very young age. Being forced into piano lessons in first grade pushed him to learn music theory, begrudgingly. This then allowed his curiosity to thrive in learning guitar, saxophone and eventually – DAWs (digital audio workstations). He threads the needle of being a crazy sound designer, producer and engineer with skill in the instrumentation side of performance. Will really prides himself in working in both worlds and pushing the limit for having both be present in the Fortune Favor project. Will also is unofficially Adobe certified and loves working on graphic design and content creation despite no formal training.

Marcus has been immersed in music since the age of two, beginning as a drummer before expanding into singing, songwriting, producing and DJing. Over the years, he taught himself how to work in multiple DAWs and developed particular strengths in melody, vocal production and arrangement. As a full-time DJ and live performer, Marcus is constantly exposed to how music connects with people in real time, giving him a unique perspective that carries into his production. He prides himself on his versatility and ability to wear multiple hats throughout the creative process, whether producing, writing, arranging vocals, playing drums or performing. His influences across R&B, soul, funk, pop, hip-hop and dance music allow him to bring different worlds together within Fortune Favor.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to us has many meanings.

Success in our lives under a pragmatic sense revolves mostly around creating independence and choice. We want our music to make our lives thrive and support our families for generations.

For our creative success, we view that as creating timeless art that inspires generations after us to do something different and chase their dreams.

We’ve never felt like there’s a “destination” or certain milestone that will determine we’ve “made it.” All we know is that music lights our hearts on fire and we want to create the opportunity to do that forever and take care of the people around us.
