Hidden Gems: Meet Jacquelyne Millender of Wear to buy Black

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacquelyne Millender.

Hi Jacquelyne, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story began with what I thought was a simple solution to a problem I was having and assumed others might be having too. I wanted a place to go where I could find all the Black-owned businesses in and around the DMV. Years later, I founded Wear to Buy Black, a digital marketing platform dedicated to increasing the visibility of Black-owned businesses while making it easier for consumers to discover, support, and fall in love with them. What started as a passion project has grown into a thriving ecosystem that connects thousands of consumers with Black-owned fashion, beauty, and lifestyle brands in the DMV and beyond.

My background in project management, combined with my experience as a U.S. Air Force veteran and entrepreneur, taught me how to build systems that create lasting impact. Instead of simply promoting products, I wanted to build infrastructure that helps Black-owned businesses grow sustainably. Today, our work goes beyond marketing—we create opportunities for brands to reach new audiences, increase sales, and build long-term customer relationships.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I believe that’s true for every entrepreneur who’s building something meaningful.

One of the biggest challenges has been growing a mission-driven business with limited resources. Many Black-owned businesses operate with smaller marketing budgets, so one of my goals has always been finding creative ways to deliver meaningful results while keeping our services accessible. That has required a great deal of innovation, persistence, and learning.

Another challenge has been earning visibility in a crowded digital landscape. Social media algorithms change constantly, consumer behaviors evolve, and attention has become one of the most valuable currencies in business. We’ve had to continually adapt our strategies, embrace new technologies, and stay ahead of trends to ensure the businesses we serve continue to be seen.

Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve also had moments of balancing multiple roles—founder, marketer, strategist, salesperson, and problem solver—all at the same time. Building a business often means making difficult decisions, wearing many hats, and continuing to move forward even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Our mission is simple: make it easier for exceptional Black-owned brands to be seen, supported, and celebrated.

What sets us apart is that we don’t just promote businesses—we build connections. We bridge the gap between consumers who want to shop Black and entrepreneurs who deserve greater visibility. Rather than focusing on one-time promotions, we’ve created a trusted platform where businesses can continuously reach new audiences and where consumers can confidently discover brands they’ll return to again and again. We believe visibility is more than marketing; it’s a catalyst for economic growth, opportunity, and community impact.

What I’m most proud of is the community we’ve built and the purpose that drives our work. Every brand we introduce, every partnership we create, and every consumer we inspire to shop intentionally contributes to something much bigger than a sale. Wear to Buy Black exists because we believe that when Black-owned businesses are visible, they can thrive—and when they thrive, they create jobs, build generational wealth, and strengthen communities. That’s the legacy we’re committed to building every day.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Success isn’t just about building a profitable business—it’s about using that business to create visibility, open doors, and leave communities stronger than you found them. I believe that when people have access to opportunity, they can transform not only their own lives but also the lives of future generations.

That’s why everything I do centers on economic empowerment. Through Wear to Buy Black, my goal is to help Black-owned businesses gain the exposure they deserve so they can grow, create jobs, and build generational wealth. I also believe deeply in investing in the next generation by showing young people that entrepreneurship is a viable path to creating their own opportunities and making a meaningful impact.

At the end of the day, I want my legacy to be measured by the lives I’ve helped change. If Wear to Buy Black inspires someone to support a Black-owned business, helps an entrepreneur reach a new level of success, or encourages a young person to believe their ideas have value, then I know we’re accomplishing something that matters far beyond business
