Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Davis.
Hi Nicole, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey to founding H.U.R. Stories Outreach began while I was working as a Medical Assistant instructor at a Job Corps Center. As an educator, I quickly realized that many of the young people I taught had experienced significant trauma and adversity. While every student faced unique challenges, I found myself especially drawn to the young women.
Many of them struggled with anger, low self-esteem, and behaviors that were often misunderstood. Instead of seeing only their attitudes, I saw reflections of my own past. I recognized that beneath their pain was a need to be heard, valued, and loved.
That realization inspired me to begin hosting after-school workshops focused on self-love, self-respect, and personal growth. What started as simple discussions soon evolved into healing circles where the young women were encouraged to speak openly about their experiences in a safe, judgment-free environment.
As they shared their stories, I listened to accounts of trauma, loss, and hardship that deeply impacted me. Although many of their experiences were heartbreaking, I witnessed the power of creating a space where they felt seen, heard, and supported. Over time, I began to notice positive changes in their confidence, attitudes, and overall behavior.
Those experiences confirmed what I already believed: healing begins when people know they are not alone.
That is why I founded H.U.R. Stories Outreach—to extend those same safe, supportive spaces beyond the classroom. Our goal is to empower young women by providing healing circles, mentorship, life skills, and opportunities for personal growth. We are committed to serving young women in Job Corps centers, schools, and communities throughout Baltimore City, helping them discover their strength, embrace their worth, and rewrite their stories with hope, resilience, and purpose.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, the journey has not been a smooth one. Like many nonprofit founders, I have faced my share of challenges. In addition to leading H.U.R. Stories Outreach, I also work a full-time job, which requires me to carefully balance my professional responsibilities with my passion for serving young women in our community.
One of the greatest challenges has been securing adequate funding. While my vision for H.U.R. Stories Outreach continues to grow, limited financial resources have sometimes made it difficult to provide all of the programs, workshops, and experiences I know would make an even greater impact. There have been moments when I had to postpone ideas or find creative ways to accomplish our mission with very limited resources.
Despite these obstacles, I remain committed to the work because I have witnessed the life-changing impact that a safe, supportive environment can have on young women. Every challenge has strengthened my determination to continue building an organization that empowers, uplifts, and inspires. I believe that with continued community support and increased funding, H.U.R. Stories Outreach will be able to reach even more young women and expand its impact throughout Baltimore City and beyond.

H.U.R. Stories Outreach is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young women who have experienced trauma, adversity, or life challenges. We create safe, supportive spaces where healing begins through mentorship, healing circles, life skills workshops, and programs that promote self-love, self-worth, and resilience. Our mission is to inspire young women to recognize their value, overcome obstacles, and rewrite their stories with confidence, hope, and purpose while strengthening the communities they call home.
What makes you happy?
One of the highlights of each year is our annual fundraising fashion show, which celebrates the young women participating in our mentoring program. This special event is more than just a fundraiser—it’s an opportunity to make each participant feel seen, valued, and confident. It is called the I Am H.U.R. fashion show.
The day begins with a full glam experience, where each young woman has her hair and makeup professionally styled before stepping into several outfits to model on the runway. Throughout the weeks of preparation, many of the young women struggle with self-confidence and are often hesitant to be in the spotlight. However, by the time they walk the runway, the transformation is incredible.
Watching them stand tall, smile with confidence, and embrace their beauty is one of the most rewarding parts of my work. Seeing their growth from uncertainty during rehearsals to confidence on stage reminds me why H.U.R. Stories Outreach exists. It is a powerful reflection of what can happen when young women are encouraged, supported, and reminded of their worth.
