Hi Cortez, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello my name is Cortez
I’m from NYC
Throughout my life I’ve always been told that I was always funny, hilarious and genuine person. Its was timing & the universes will that I ended up being a comedian.
Its all started right before the pandemic I went to a couple podcasting events where I made the crowd laugh & engage with what was going on. Then I was invited by the two host to do a few podcasting episodes where my comedic rise started to catch a small buzz. I ultimately left and from there I started writing producing and shooting skits.
I found it hard to get consistent participation with creating and shooting skits so that led me to doing stand-up comedy where I bombed my very first night at an open mic. And I looked at it like I can only go up from here.
Now I am an experienced comic performing across New York City and comedy clubs nationwide. Known for an observational, witty, and
personal style, with a proven track record of connecting with diverse audiences.
I have experience as both a host and opening act, & a headliner with consistent bookings at established
comedy venues and on national tours.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No it has not been a smooth road but with each obstacle comes insight and knowledge that continues to propel me forward and achieving my goals in my dream.
Some of the struggles have been dealing with rejection from comedy festivals. Not always getting in comedy clubs to do time. Losing comedy competitions but understanding that comedy is an art and art is very subjective so what one person finds funny another person may not. So I understand that I’ve learned to be the best version of me when I hit the stage because I know I can’t please everybody.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am stand-up comic/content creator.
But more comic than anything.
Most proud of my ability to bring joy and laughter into peoples lives because you never know what a person is going through and they might need a smile or laugh to get them past whatever they are enduring.
What sets me apart is my versatility and my ability to connect the dots and reach people on an intellectual, emotional, and comical level.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice for people just starting out is to study with a open mind and an open heart the art of comedy. Watch, study & listen to comics that you like, really pay attention to the ones that are successful, But be humble enough to watch and listen to the ones who haven’t quite reached success because you can always learn from their ways as well.
The thing that I wish I had known first starting out is be comfortable with the silence on stage just because you don’t hear the laughs doesn’t mean that they don’t like you. Sometimes it means that they’re waiting in anticipation for the joke to continue to build.
