Conversations with Imanya James

Today we’d like to introduce you to Imanya James.

Hi Imanya, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story started with a film camera. My dad gave it to me along with a photography book, and I read that book until the pages were worn out. I’ve always seen the world a little differently, and having a camera in my hands gave me a way to slow down, observe, and tell stories that words couldn’t always capture. During times when I felt like I didn’t have many safe spaces, creating became one.

As I grew older, that love for storytelling evolved into a career spanning marketing, visual design, editorial media, and beauty. Although the work looked different on the surface, I realized I was always chasing the same purpose: helping people feel seen through authentic storytelling and thoughtful experiences.

That realization inspired me to create Jade Haven. It was built on the belief that beauty isn’t superficial—it’s a way of telling stories, building confidence, and creating connection. Today, Jade Haven is a creative lifestyle company where beauty, art, aesthetics, and wellness come together through creative strategy, visual storytelling, editorial media, and aesthetic consulting. No matter the medium, my goal is always the same: to create work that feels authentic, intentional, and leaves a lasting impact.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. There have been seasons where I felt lost and had to reconnect with the reason I started creating in the first place. When life became overwhelming, it was easy to question whether the things I was building mattered or whether my vision was too big.

What kept bringing me back were the moments when my work reached people in ways I didn’t expect. Every opportunity, every person who connected with something I created, and every reminder that my perspective had value helped me realize that even when I felt small, the work was still making a difference.

That has been one of the biggest lessons in my journey: impact doesn’t always come from having the biggest platform or the loudest voice. Sometimes it comes from creating something honest and meaningful that allows someone else to feel seen. Those moments continue to shape Jade Haven and remind me why authenticity, creativity, and connection are at the center of everything I do.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I would describe myself as a multidisciplinary creative, artist, and storyteller. My work is rooted in the intersection of beauty, art, culture, aesthetics, and strategy. My creative journey started with photography—a film camera my dad gave me when I was younger that taught me how to slow down, observe, and find beauty in everyday moments. That perspective continues to influence everything I create today.

Through Jade Haven, I explore different forms of creative expression, from photography and visual direction to brand storytelling, editorial media, creative strategy, and beauty consulting. I specialize in helping ideas transform into meaningful experiences by finding the story, emotion, and intention behind them.

What I’m most proud of is my ability to create work that connects with people. Whether I’m developing a brand concept, capturing a visual story, or creating content that sparks conversation, my goal is always to make something that feels authentic and intentional. I don’t believe creativity is just about aesthetics—it’s about creating moments where people feel seen.

What sets me apart is my ability to bridge worlds that are often separated. I don’t view beauty, art, strategy, and storytelling as individual disciplines; I see them as connected pieces of a larger conversation. My perspective has always been shaped by curiosity and observation, and I bring that same lens into every project I create.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that might surprise people is how much thought happens behind the scenes before I share anything publicly. My creative process is very detail-oriented—I can get caught up in the smallest things, from the feeling a visual creates to whether a single word communicates the right emotion.

For a long time, I saw that as something I needed to work on, but I’ve learned that it’s also part of what makes my perspective unique. I notice things. I question things. I’m constantly refining and looking for the details that make something feel intentional rather than simply beautiful.

That way of seeing the world has been with me for as long as I can remember. When I first picked up a camera, I realized I wasn’t just interested in capturing what was in front of me—I was interested in the emotion, story, and meaning behind it. That same curiosity still guides my work today. Whether I’m creating a visual concept, developing a brand story, or building an experience, I’m always looking for the details that make something feel authentic and memorable.
