Daily Inspiration: Meet Delphine Kelly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Delphine Kelly.

Hi Delphine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I would like to share the journey that led me to my current role. My career in education began in the 1990s as a second-grade teacher at a Catholic elementary school. When that school closed, I initially planned to join the Prince George’s County Public Schools system with my colleagues. However, a parent approached me with a request to homeschool her son. Although I was initially hesitant, I eventually accepted the offer.

What started with one student quickly grew as other parents inquired about my services. Soon, I was homeschooling nine children, which eventually evolved into the Jabez Christian Academy. I operated this private school for ten years until the pandemic forced its closure in 2020.

For the past seven years, I have had the privilege of serving as the Director of Cheverly Weekday Nursery. I am proud to lead such a hardworking and dedicated team. Notably, we have never had to advertise for enrollment; all of our students come to us through word of mouth. This success speaks volumes about the reputation of our school and the quality of our staff.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Regarding the obstacles and trials I have faced, I believe there is no smooth road in life; my journey has certainly included significant challenges.

During my time operating my school, both of my parents who were also dedicated staff members passed away within three years of each other. Losing them was incredibly difficult, as they were my best friends and foundational members of my team. This loss took a significant toll on me, my family, and the school community. I remain deeply grateful for their guidance, support, and the love I will always treasure.

Another major obstacle I faced as a business owner was the school’s location. Having to move several times caused enrollment to decline, which subsequently led to a reduction in staff. At one point, our team went from ten members down to just myself and one other teacher.

Although Jabez Christian Academy eventually closed its doors, I value the lessons I learned through that experience. I am thankful for these trials and challenges, as they allowed me to grow into the person I am today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

What matters most to you?
When I was a young girl, I used to ask my mother what she wanted for her birthday or the holidays. She would always reply, “A peace of mind.” I never understood that statement then, but as I have grown older, I now recognize what she was searching for. As I continue on this journey called life, I can truly say that peace is what matters most.

Right now, my priority is continuing to find that peace. I believe that having true peace allows a life to be filled with joy, positivity, and understanding.
