Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanesha Davis.
Hi Tanesha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always appreciated how a small part can make a significant contribution towards something greater. I’ve always enjoyed taking pictures. But it’s also about freezing moments in time. I really took a dive into photography after my grandmother on my mother’s side passed away and even though we were extremely close, I didn’t have any pictures of her and I together as an adult. So I made it a point to always capture life whether it be staged or candid. A picture really does tell a story. I bought my 1st professional camera (Canon Rebel T6i) in 2019. It was also the year we found out my mother had cancer. She had been living with me for 4 years at that point , so I tried to take as many pictures of our lives together until she passed in 2021. She was my biggest supporter. I found a weekly open mic event when I needed a break from being a caregiver and started a relationship with the curator who would use my photos for promotion. Through that I’ve met and built a lot of connections that have allowed me to grow professionally.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Continuing to be creative without allowing the grief losing of my mom and reevaluating the connections that have been made to deter my focus. Photography was an outlet and it kept me connected to the art and social life by default.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m known for photography but I’ve been in the media industry for over 20 years. I am also a camera operator for concerts and live events. I’m proud of the journey to get where I am. I also work as an IT Analyst for the State of Maryland. My skills and experience have allowed my name to be spoken in rooms before my feet touched the ground. I am truly blessed. My perseverance sets me apart. I’m not the youngest in the game but I’m still willing to learn from others. Technology is constantly evolving and because of the industry I work in, I’m able to stay ahead of the game.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My parents. My mom supported me. She was always willing to be my photo subject. My tribe/ good girlfriend’s always been there for me. They were my first paying and repeat customers. My poetry family have always encouraged and hired me. Sometimes than not, strangers are more supportive than some people you’ll know.
