Meet Jack Anderson of Ellicott City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Anderson.

Hi Jack, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Managing 700+ family hives in South Africa sparked a lifelong passion for beekeeping. I later transformed this passion into a mission-driven business upon moving to Ellicott City, MD. LumberJack Apiary was born after winning Grand Champion at the Howard County Fair with a perfect score of 100- our first honey contest ever! Our flagship SLF “HoCo Honey” was developed by combining my agricultural background, military-forged discipline, and academic training as an AHSTC Certified Honey Judge to produce high-quality, ethically sourced local honey.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We had a total hive collapse last year due to a bad well, that we only found out needed shocking in October. So we had to rebuild from scratch. Which we did and a lot of it had to do with the rare value that the spotted lantern fly brings to honey. We learned good hard lessons and proved the resilience of our business model and unique rare quality.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Our awards, brand, style and genuinely awesome story of how we turned an invasive species interacting with our honey bees into the most valuable and sought after local luxury honey in the mid Atlantic and nationally. We have customers all the way over on the west coast that swear by our unique spotted lantern fly honey. People can taste the difference and we have the scientific evidence to back it up. It’s been a great opportunity to learn from and work with the most respected experts in our field. I think our customers are the most important part of what we are proud of, because they genuinely feel like they are part of the lumberjack family and lifestyle when they buy our honey.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m also a dj and producer, but music doesn’t keep the lights on, and honey is just sweeter anyway, right?
