Inspiring Conversations with Calissa Rodriguez of Laurel Field Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Calissa Rodriguez.

Hi Calissa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Laurel Field Company started with us simply loving the outdoors. Matt and I were already spending so much of our free time gardening, birding, learning native plants, and noticing how much life a yard can support when the right plants are there.

I’m currently studying conservation biology and ecology, and Matt has always loved working with his hands, growing plants, and building things. Over time, those pieces naturally came together. We started in our own yard, learning what worked, growing native plants, and slowly helping others do the same.

Now Laurel Field Company is our way of helping people create gardens and outdoor spaces that feel beautiful, natural, and full of life.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been the knowledge gap around plants and landscaping in general. A lot of people want a beautiful yard, but they have never really been shown how much plants affect wildlife, soil, water, and the health of the space around them.

Because of that, a big part of what we do is education. We are constantly learning how to explain native plants in a way that feels simple, approachable, and not overwhelming. We want people to understand that a garden can be beautiful while also doing something meaningful for the local environment.

As you know, we’re big fans of Laurel Field Company. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Laurel Field Company is a small native landscaping, habitat design, and native plant business. We help bring life back to yards, woodland edges, slopes, business properties, and overlooked spaces through native planting, invasive plant removal, birdhouses, and habitat-focused projects.

We are also starting to grow and sell native plants, which is a big part of where we are headed. What sets us apart is that we look at land as more than something to decorate. With North America losing nearly 3 billion birds since 1970, even small spaces matter. We want people to know their property can support birds, pollinators, insects, soil, and the life already around them.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
We have had a lot of support from family, friends, early clients, and people in our community. Every person who has encouraged us, shared our work, asked questions, or trusted us with their property has helped us keep going.

We are especially thankful for the clients who believed in us early on. Their trust has helped Laurel Field Company grow from an idea into something real.
