Life & Work with Granite Dancer of Baltimore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Granite Dancer.

Hi Granite, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We started our journey during a high school math class, where we distracted ourselves by writing song lyrics instead of equations. Then we started pulling lyrics from random library books when outside of math class. We tried to write melodies that fit the lyrics, and then chords that fit those melodies. These days, after almost 8 years of streamlining the process, we have continued writing songs, released 4 EPs, and played a few gigs. We hope to do even more in the future!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle for us has been continuing to meet up while we were at college. We went to different schools and could only write music during the summer and winter breaks. Now that both of us have graduated, we are still not living in the same city, so we still struggle to consistently write. We’ve definitely gotten practiced at writing and recording as much as possible in the time that we do have, which is always an interesting challenge for our songwriting process.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a singer-songwriter duo, and our music tends to fall under the category of garage rock, although sometimes it’s more alternative rock, and sometimes more folk-y. We love all our music but it definitely gets more fleshed out and complete the more recent the music is, so from that perspective we’re most proud of Ask, our most recent EP.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
How to beatbox. Boom ts ka ts boom boom ts ka ts duga duga duga duga tshhhh
