Rising Stars: Meet Ashley Kenny of DC & Surrounding Areas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Kenny.

Hi Ashley, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Heirloom started from a personal experience and a simple realization: some of the most meaningful things we leave behind are our stories, voices, and memories—not physical possessions. We saw an opportunity to help families preserve those moments in a more emotional, lasting format by combining video with a keepsake people could hold onto and revisit.

What began as an idea evolved into building a fully operational business centered around video books and memory preservation. Over time, we developed the product, built supplier relationships, created the platform and processes behind fulfillment, and worked directly with customers using Heirloom for milestones, tributes, memorials, gifts, and legacy projects.

Today, Heirloom is more than a product—it’s a brand focused on helping people capture connection across generations. The journey has included refining the model, learning from customers, and exploring new growth opportunities and partnerships to expand the impact of what we’ve built.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. Building Heirloom has been rewarding, but there have been plenty of challenges along the way. Like many startups, we had to navigate product development, manufacturing logistics, inventory management, and educating customers about a category that was still relatively new to many people.

One of the biggest struggles was balancing growth with limited resources—making decisions about where to invest time and capital while continuing to refine the customer experience. There were also moments of uncertainty around scaling, partnerships, and finding the most sustainable path forward.

Because Heirloom is rooted in preserving memories and legacy, customer expectations are understandably high. Delivering something emotionally meaningful while maintaining operational efficiency has been both challenging and important.

That said, each obstacle helped shape the business. The setbacks forced us to become more adaptable, resourceful, and focused on what customers truly value.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I came into Heirloom from a filmmaking background, where I spent a lot of time focused on storytelling—how to capture emotion, structure narrative, and translate real human moments into something that resonates on screen.

At Heirloom, I’ve taken that same lens and applied it to product building. Instead of traditional film, the medium is now a physical video book, but the core idea is the same: helping people preserve meaningful stories in a way that feels authentic and emotionally powerful.

I work across both the creative and operational sides of the business—shaping the storytelling experience, refining the product, and making sure what we deliver actually reflects the quality and intention of the moments people are trying to preserve.

What I’m most proud of is bringing a filmmaker’s attention to detail and emotion into a scalable product, so families can experience storytelling in a more tangible, lasting form.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Coming from a filmmaking background, I initially thought the strength of the idea and the emotional resonance of the product would carry a lot of the weight. In reality, the outcome is determined by the unglamorous details—operational discipline, customer experience consistency, and the ability to iterate quickly when something isn’t working.

I’ve also learned that when you’re building something emotional and physical at the same time, clarity becomes critical. If the customer experience isn’t simple, reliable, and intuitive, the emotional impact you’re trying to create gets lost.

So the focus has shifted from “how do we make this compelling?” to “how do we make this consistently deliver what it promises, every time.”
