Exploring Life & Business with Brandon Copeland of Khepera Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Copeland.

Hi Brandon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started teaching yoga after practicing for the first time while at Howard University. I used the practice to help me find balance between my classes, my coming first-born and the weight of not knowing how yet to be an adult. Yoga became my peace. The studio my sanctuary. After a while, sneaking off from campus to take practice felt selfish. All of my friends were dealing with problems and none of us knew what to do– but I had an answer. Yoga. I felt scared to tell them how I was handling my problems, but after a while I got the confidence to practice on campus. That practice grew from the flag pole on The Yard to the dorms and eventually became our company, Khepera Wellness. In that time we have created hundreds of experience’s focusing on giving people a place to find that same peace that drew me in from day one.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We’ve had plenty of issues over the years but they we’re solved one step at a time. At first the struggles of finding a place to teach caused us to creatively figure out how to share the practice with people. We started to host classes in parks and schools, going to people that needed the practice instead of expecting them to come to us. There weren’t many classes that were offered to discuss many of the social justice issues we were experiencing a the time as a community. We created them. Trap Yoga, R&B Yoga, Inhale Meditation Series, Black Girl Magic Yoga and many more creative concepts were executed thanks to the obstacles we faced over the years. These challenges have served us much like a sore muscle or tight tendon in a yoga class– they caused us to pause, rethink our approach, and we’ve become stronger and wiser thanks to the renewed effort.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Amazing wellness experiences including our Trap Yoga classes. We are most known for and proud of the classes we offer in the black community and the opportunities we give to students, teachers, and organizations to connect.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is helping peopel find out a bit more about themselves. We believe that the body and mind are designed to help us uncover a connection to the best versions of ourselves. When we teach a class the goal is for folks to remember their capacity to feel that connection. When we do our jobs, concern for the poses and their requirements all fall away for the student to make way for vulnerability, understanding and ultimately contentment.
