Inspiring Conversations with Erin Wright of Silver Canon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Wright.

Hi Erin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Since I was young, I’ve always enjoyed video games, creating content, and community building. I joined nearly every leadership class I could, and started my own YouTube channel. Later, I began streaming on Twitch and found mild success, including sponsorships, gifted games to review, and my own little corner of the internet. That was until I tagged along with my sister to trade in some board games.

I got my job by accident, truthfully. I passingly mentioned I was looking for a new job and was passionate about my hobbies at the time. Jason, my current boss, asks me, “Well, what are you up to?”

Funnily enough, I began listing off my resume and current responsibilities. Jason stops me and goes, “No, I mean like, right now.” I had nothing planned for the day…

Welp, I rearranged a shelf, redid some displays, and the rest is history. I run a game store. It came with more responsibilities than anticipated. Marketing, day-to-day operations, research, repairs- the list goes on.

I don’t see myself doing anything else, and we plan to expand and improve as much as we can.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My family still believes I sit around and play games all day. Few understand that while awesome, this job is still *work*.

Currently, it’s long hours, nearly 50 or more a week spent making deals, posting, listing, buying, selling, and trading. It leaves very little time to enjoy my own life, hobbies, and relationships. But the reality that one day the brand will take off and we’ll be able to fund even larger projects excites me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Silver Canon is a local game store in Baltimore, Maryland. We understand how insane the market has gone when it comes to nerdy hobbies. Everything is seen as an “investment” instead of what it is- entertainment.
Entertainment should be accessible to everyone. If you walk in with a $5 bill, we’ll find you something to enjoy. Toys are meant to be played with, and that’s why when customers trade in their collections, we’re happy to find them new homes at reasonable prices.

Everyone also deserves a space where they feel safe to express themselves. Running weekly D&D/tabletop games has encouraged this, and when our groups get rowdy or loud, it’s an amazing problem to have.
I want everyone to enjoy themselves. The small break we’re able to provide, hopefully, eases the weight of the rest of life.

If you want to enter the hobby space, we’re incredibly newcomer-friendly. With miniature paint classes, tools, teaching events, and Game Masters/DMs always willing to help, we’ve created the perfect space.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My boss and mentor, Jason, deserves more credit than he’ll ever really give himself. He’s guided me a majority of the way through the uncharted waters of business management. He’s given me tools to succeed and a safe space to fail and learn. I cannot express enough how thankful I am for all of his support, and the only way I could ever think of paying him back is skyrocketing this place and making our dreams come true. Or maybe a good steak, he might appreciate that too.

Pricing:

  • Miniature Paint Class: $20/person
  • (Most) TTRPG Games: FREE
