Life & Work with Steven Johnson of Edgewood, MD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Johnson.

Steven, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up in a tough neighborhood in Baltimore taught me resilience early in life. Opportunities were limited, and success often felt distant, but I was determined to build something better for myself and my future. While working at the courthouse, I began learning the hardwood refinishing trade and slowly building my business after hours, one floor at a time. What started as side work gradually turned into a passion and a vision for something greater.

There were long days balancing a full-time job while trying to grow a company from the ground up. Every customer, every referral, and every completed project became another step forward. Through consistency, hard work, and faith, I was able to steadily build a reputation for quality craftsmanship and professionalism in the hardwood flooring industry.

That dedication eventually allowed me to achieve goals that once felt out of reach… including purchasing a home in Harford County and transitioning into hardwood refinishing full time. Today, owning and operating Angelic Floor Care represents more than just business success to me; it represents perseverance, growth, and proof that where you start in life does not have to determine where you finish.

My journey is a reminder that success is often built slowly, through sacrifice, persistence, and believing in yourself even when the process feels uncertain.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. There were many moments where I questioned whether I should keep going at all. Before I was able to move to Harford County and run my business full time, I was living in a rough neighborhood in Baltimore while working at the courthouse and trying to build my hardwood refinishing business on the side. At one point, someone even attempted to break into my house while my wife and children were inside. Experiences like that weigh on you mentally because you are already trying to survive financially while also chasing something bigger for your future and trying to protect your family at the same time.

On top of that, many people doubted me in the beginning. Some did not take the business seriously, and others felt I should stay comfortable with a regular paycheck instead of taking the risk of entrepreneurship. Building a business from the ground up with limited resources was extremely difficult. There were slow seasons, financial pressure, long hours, and plenty of setbacks that people never see from the outside.

I almost gave up many times. But I kept reminding myself why I started in the first place… to create a better life, build something meaningful, and prove to myself that I was capable of more. Looking back now, those struggles helped shape my work ethic, resilience, and appreciation for how far I’ve come.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in hardwood floor maintenance and restoration, with a focus on bringing floors back to life without the disruption, cost, and downtime of a full sanding process. Most people assume worn or dull hardwood automatically needs to be completely sanded down, but that isn’t always the case. A large part of my work is what’s called screen and recoat restoration — a process that refreshes the protective finish, improves appearance, and extends the life of the floor without cutting into the wood itself.

What sets me apart from a typical floor sanding contractor is that I don’t approach every floor with a “full replacement mindset.” Instead, I evaluate what the floor actually needs. In many homes, especially those with surface wear, light scratches, or finish breakdown, a full sanding is unnecessary and can be more invasive than required. My goal is to preserve as much of the original floor as possible while still delivering a noticeable transformation.

This approach is especially valuable for homeowners who want low disruption, faster turnaround, and a cleaner process. Instead of dust-heavy sanding projects that can take days and require furniture removal and extended downtime, maintenance-based restoration can often be completed much quicker while still dramatically improving the look and protection of the floors.

What I’m most proud of is being able to help homeowners extend the life of their floors and avoid unnecessary refinishing costs. A lot of people are told they need a full sand when they really don’t, and being able to offer a more practical, honest solution builds trust and long-term relationships with clients.

Ultimately, what separates me is that I specialize in maintaining hardwood floors, not just sanding them. I focus on preservation, education, and helping homeowners make the right decision for their floors rather than the most expensive one.

Any big plans?
My focus moving forward is steady growth while continuing to maintain the quality and trust that built my business in the first place. I’m looking forward to expanding Angelic Floor Care in a way that allows me to serve more homeowners while still keeping a hands-on, detail-oriented approach to every project.

Right now, I’m especially focused on educating homeowners on proper hardwood floor maintenance and helping people understand that not every floor needs a full sanding. I want to continue building that reputation as someone who offers honest evaluations and practical solutions rather than unnecessary work.

In the long term, I see continued growth in both the residential and referral side of the business, with a strong emphasis on consistency, professionalism, and customer trust. More than anything, I want to keep building something that lasts… not just in terms of business size, but in reputation and relationships within the community.
