Inspiring Conversations with Carrae Green of First Class Home Cleaning

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrae Green.

Hi Carrae, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After nearly 28 years of federal service, I reached a point where I wanted more freedom, flexibility, and purpose. Throughout my career, I managed large-scale projects, analyzed complex data, and worked in high-pressure environments that required professionalism, organization, and attention to detail. Those same skills eventually became the foundation for entrepreneurship.

What started as a desire to create additional income and more control over my future turned into the vision for First Class Home Cleaning— a company built on reliability, professionalism, and creating peaceful, healthy spaces for families and businesses.

I launched the business with a remote management model, allowing me to oversee operations, scheduling, customer service, marketing, and quality control without personally performing every cleaning job. Instead, I focused on building systems, leveraging technology, and creating a dependable team that could deliver consistent service to clients across the DMV area.

Like many entrepreneurs, the journey came with challenges — learning how to market the business, generate leads, manage contractors, and build trust in a competitive industry. But each obstacle strengthened my understanding of business ownership and reinforced my commitment to creating a company that operates with excellence and integrity.

Today, First Class Home Cleaning represents more than cleaning services. It represents transition, resilience, and the courage to build something meaningful after decades of public service. My goal is not only to grow a successful remote cleaning business, but also to create jobs, serve families, and eventually expand services that support seniors and individuals who need dependable home care support.

My journey proves that it is never too late to reinvent yourself, build a business, and create a legacy on your own terms. My goal is to start getting commercial contracts.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like many small service-based businesses, one of the biggest challenges has been building a steady client base while managing the day-to-day costs of operating the business. There have been times when income was unpredictable, but expenses—supplies, transportation, equipment, marketing, and basic business costs—did not slow down. In the beginning especially, I had to work hard to earn trust, build a reputation, and prove the quality of my work one home at a time.

Another major challenge has been balancing business growth with personal responsibilities. My stepfather, an 81-year-old Vietnam veteran, went from using a walker to becoming confined to a wheelchair in a very short period of time. That brought emotional strain and additional family responsibilities while I was trying to keep First Class Home Cleaning moving forward.

There have been discouraging moments—slow seasons, financial pressure, and the constant challenge of wearing every hat in the business: cleaner, scheduler, marketer, customer service representative, and owner. But those struggles taught me resilience, discipline, and how to keep going even when growth felt slow.

Those experiences have made First Class Home Cleaning more than just a source of income. They have made it personal. This business represents stability for my family, independence for my future, and the foundation I am working to build for something lasting.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
If I could give one piece of advice to someone just starting out, it would be this: protect your reputation from day one.

When I started **First Class Home Cleaning**, I thought success would come from working hard—and hard work absolutely matters—but I learned that consistency, professionalism, and trust are what truly build a business. In the beginning, you may not have a big budget, a large team, or a long list of clients. What you do have is your name, and every single job helps define it.

One thing I wish I understood earlier is that growth is usually much slower than people expect. There are going to be quiet weeks, financial pressure, and moments where it feels like you are putting in more than you are getting back. That can be discouraging, but those are the moments that shape you. Those are the moments where real businesses are built.

I also wish I had known not to undervalue my work. A lot of people starting out price themselves too low because they think cheaper means more clients. Many new business owners undercharge because they want to attract clients, but that can make it hard to cover supplies, transportation, time, and the real cost of running a business. I learned that your pricing has to support both your customer and your ability to grow. What I learned through **First Class Home Cleaning** is that your pricing has to respect your time, your quality, and the real cost of running your business.

Most of all, I would tell new entrepreneurs not to wait until everything feels perfect. Start with what you have. Learn as you go. Improve as you grow. The beginning can feel uncertain, but if you stay committed to doing excellent work and treating people right, those small early steps can become the foundation of something lasting.
