Life & Work with Nyleena Aiken of DUNKIRK, MD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nyleena Aiken.

Nyleena, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I usually describe myself as someone who loves building things that bring people together.
Right now my main focus is Phictly, the platform I founded for readers and writers who want a more personal and meaningful experience with books and with each other. It grew out of my own love of reading and the feeling that stories deserve a space where people can connect in a real way.
Alongside that, I work as a managing consultant, which has given me a strong foundation in structured problem solving and communication. It has taught me how to navigate complex situations and how to work with all kinds of people. Those skills naturally support the work I do as a founder.
A lot of who I am comes from being the oldest daughter. I grew up learning how to lead, how to listen, and how to take care of the people around me. Those instincts show up in how I build teams and how I approach community.
At my core, I am a reader and a writer. Books have always been my way of understanding the world. They influence how I think, how I design products, and how I connect with people. Reading keeps me curious. Writing keeps me grounded.
So when I talk about my work, the through line is simple. I care about creating spaces and systems that help people feel connected, understood, and inspired.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges for me has been learning how to move through uncertainty with confidence. Building something from scratch means there is no clear map, and I had to get comfortable making decisions without having every answer. It pushed me to trust my instincts in a new way.

I also had to learn how to ask for help. As the oldest daughter and someone who has always been the responsible one, I was used to carrying everything myself. Stepping into a founder role made it clear that I could not build something meaningful alone. Letting people in has been a real point of growth for me.

And honestly, managing perfectionism has been a journey. My consulting background trained me to polish everything before it sees the light of day, but startups move fast. I had to shift from trying to make things perfect to focusing on progress and learning. It has made me more flexible and more creative.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work centers on building Phictly, a platform designed for readers and writers who want a more personal and meaningful experience with books. I specialize in creating products that feel human, intuitive, and community driven. Phictly grew out of my own love of reading and my belief that stories deserve a space where people can connect in a real way, not just scroll past each other.

What I’m most proud of is how much intention sits behind every part of the platform. I built Phictly to solve real problems I saw in the book world, and I built it with the mindset of someone who understands both the creative side and the structural side. I care about making things that feel warm, accessible, and genuinely useful.

People often tell me that what sets me apart is the combination of strategy and heart I bring to my work. I have a consulting background, so I understand systems, operations, and how to move ideas into action. At the same time, I’m a reader and a writer, so I understand the emotional side of storytelling and community. That blend helps me build products that are both thoughtful and practical.

This July, I’m bringing that same approach to the Phictly Global Digital Book Festival on July 25, 2026, a mobile-first virtual book festival where readers meet authors face to face through live, private video calls. With over 50+ authors confirmed across 11 genres, including NYT and USA Today bestselling authors, it’s the kind of event I always wished existed: real connections, real conversations, no barriers. You can learn more at phictly.com/bookfest.

At the end of the day, I’m focused on creating something that helps people feel connected, inspired, and seen. Phictly is my way of bringing that to life.

How do you define success?
For me, success is about alignment. It is the feeling that the work I am doing matches who I am, what I care about, and the kind of impact I want to have. When I can look at something I built and see that it is helping people feel connected or understood, that feels like success.

I also define success by growth. I want to look back and see that I stretched myself, learned something new, or handled a challenge with more grace than I would have a year ago. Progress matters to me more than perfection.

And finally, success is about community. If the people around me feel supported, inspired, or encouraged because of something I created or contributed to, that means a lot. With Phictly, that is the part that motivates me the most. I want to build something that makes people feel seen.
