Today we’d like to introduce you to KJ Davis.
Hi KJ , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My interest in computers and technology began in 1997 when my grandfather bought me a Gateway PC. From that moment, I became fascinated with electronics and wanted to understand what was inside computers and components that made them work. Growing up, no electronic device in the house was safe — I would take apart VCRs, DVD players, radios, game consoles, and computers just to learn how they functioned, then put them back together again.
By middle school and high school, my passion had already turned into a skill. Friends would regularly pay me to repair their computers and gaming consoles, which gave me early hands-on experience troubleshooting and fixing technology problems. After graduating from high school, I took a year to decide whether I wanted to attend a traditional college or a trade school. Although Morgan State University had a strong reputation for Electronics Engineering, I ultimately decided to attend ITT Technical Institute, where I earned an Associate’s Degree in Computer Electronics and Engineering Technology.
That degree helped launch my professional career and led to an IT role supporting the Federal Government in Washington, D.C.. Over the years, I continued building experience in technical support, troubleshooting, and IT operations while strengthening both my technical and customer service skills.
In 2020, during the COVID pandemic, I launched KTG IT Solutions, LLC to provide reliable technology support and computer repair services for individuals and small businesses. Building the company has allowed me to combine my lifelong passion for technology with entrepreneurship, while continuing to grow in areas such as IT support, systems engineering, and cybersecurity. My goal is to keep expanding my knowledge, growing my business, and helping people solve real-world technology challenges through dependable and professional IT services.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges I faced early on was wanting instant gratification. I wanted success to happen quickly, but over time I learned that real growth takes planning, consistency, patience, and maintaining a positive mindset. I had to make sacrifices and stay focused on the bigger picture instead of looking for immediate results.
As I progressed in my IT career, I spent a lot of time working in desktop support roles. While I gained valuable technical experience, there were moments when I felt stuck and knew I did not want to spend my entire career doing desktop support. Being a big guy, crawling underneath desks, running cables through ceilings, and doing physically demanding work every day was definitely not fun lol. That realization pushed me to think bigger about my future and the direction I wanted my career to go.
I made the decision to go back to school and pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. That came with sacrifices. I had to give up time with friends and family, stay disciplined, and really lock in on my goals. There were times when balancing work, school, and life felt overwhelming, but I kept my eye on the prize and trusted the process.
Once I earned my degree, more opportunities started opening up for me professionally. It gave me the confidence to continue growing beyond entry-level support roles and helped position me for greater opportunities in IT, systems engineering, cybersecurity, and business ownership. Looking back, the struggles taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of investing in yourself even when the results are not immediate.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice to anyone looking for mentors or trying to network is:
Be consistent and reliable.
Stay teachable and open to feedback.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Put yourself in environments where growth is happening.
Focus on building genuine relationships instead of chasing transactions.
Keep improving your skills so when opportunities come, you will be prepared.
Most importantly, do not be afraid to ask. The worst thing someone can say is no. A single conversation, connection, or opportunity can completely change the direction of your career if you are willing to put yourself out there and stay persistent.
