Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Ford.
Hi Chris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was a former collegiate and professional catcher turned full‑time instructor and academy founder. A multi‑sport youth athlete, baseball emerged as his passion through tee ball, travel and showcase play, and standout years at Arundel High School, where he earned national attention (No. 272 overall, No. 2 catcher in Maryland) and preseason All‑American honors in 2015.
He played Division I ball at Norfolk State (2016–2017), where he became known for elite defense and leadership (.986 fielding percentage, 33% caught‑stealing rate) and helped the program to back‑to‑back Northern Division Conference titles. He transferred to Division II Rogers State (2018–2019), hitting .273 with a .455 slugging percentage and leading the conference in major defensive catching metrics in 2019 (.987 fielding percentage, 35% caught‑stealing rate).
Chris began his professional career in 2019 with the White Sands Pupfish (Pecos League) and continued with stints including the Washington Wild Things (Frontier League). During the COVID‑19 period he played in the Frontier League while giving private lessons, which rapidly grew as he immersed himself in player development—studying data, spin rates, kinematics, sequencing, and energy transfer. What began as a few lessons became a full‑time coaching career.
He worked under former Boston Red Sox pitcher John Dopson at John Dopson’s Pro Pitching Academy instructing catchers and hitters. After Dopson’s retirement, Chris took over the program as The Baseball Doctor in 2022, expanding services to include data analysis and community building. The Baseball Doctor grew from two instructors to six, and by 2025 Chris opened Diamond Sports Academy: a 6,000 sq ft facility with nine instructors, a full weight room, and tech including TrackMan, HitTrax, and Rapsodo—focusing entirely on developing baseball and softball players through modern, data‑driven instruction.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, the ride has been remarkably smooth. Running a business brings inevitable ups and downs and critics — and I take that as a sign I’m pushing boundaries and doing meaningful work. My goal has always been to be the coach I never had: a trusted mentor players can turn to on and off the field. If I can be that coach, trainer, and instructor, then I’m doing my job.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Diamond Sports Academy ?
At The Diamond Sports Academy, our state-of-the-art training facility was built to help athletes reach their peak performance. From advanced pitching tunnels to performance technology and strength areas, every square foot is designed to enhance player development in a focused, supportive environment. From private lessons to elite development programs, our coaches provide the training, mentorship, and support needed to build confidence, skill, and discipline — both on and off the field. we take pride in helping players reach their full potential — on and off the field. What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
When you first open something like The Diamond Sports Academy, you think your passion, your playing background, and your energy will carry it. And they do… for a little while. But eventually, the days get long, cancellations happen, kids plateau, parents question things, and your own energy isn’t always there.
What actually sustains and grows the business is:
● Clear structure (how sessions run, how athletes progress)
● Standards (what you expect from players and staff every day)
● Consistency (showing up the same way whether you feel like it or not)
The athletes who improve the most aren’t the most talented—they’re the ones who buy into a system. Same goes for the business itself.
The second layer of that lesson:
You can’t build it alone.
At some point, you have to shift from:
● “How do I train every kid?”
to
● “How do I build coaches and a program that trains kids the right way without me?”
That’s the difference between a facility… and an actual academy.
And honestly, one more that sneaks up on you:
Your reputation is built in the small moments.
● How you handle a frustrated parent
● Whether you give the same attention to your worst player as your best
● If you stay bought in during a slow Tuesday night
That stuff travels faster than radar gun numbers ever will.
