Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Moxley.
Hi Vanessa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into design hasn’t been traditional. I spent over 24 years in the corporate world, building a successful career, but deep down I always felt like something was missing. I was doing well, but I wasn’t fulfilled.
Everything really shifted after the loss of my father to Alzheimer’s. That was a time in my life where I slowed down and started asking myself what I truly wanted. It became very clear that I didn’t want to keep doing something that didn’t bring me joy.
Design had always been a part of me. I had renovated multiple homes over the years, and friends and family had encouraged me for a long time to pursue it. So I finally took a leap of faith and started Gracie Lain Design on the side. What I didn’t expect was how quickly it would turn into something I was so passionate about. I’ll also say—sometimes I probably care a little too much. I’m incredibly passionate about what I do, and I truly put my heart into every single project. It’s not just about getting the job done for me—it’s about making sure it feels right for my clients and that they genuinely love the end result.
As I grew in this space, I realized design is about so much more than how something looks. It’s about how a space makes you feel. I truly believe the environment you live in can impact your mood, your peace, and your everyday life—and that’s what drives me in every project.
Today, I focus on creating spaces that feel elevated, functional, and personal to each client. I also incorporate 3D renderings into my process so clients can truly see and feel their space before anything is built, which brings a level of confidence and clarity to the entire experience.
Looking back, this journey has taught me that it’s never too late to change direction and follow what truly fulfills you. Gracie Lain Design isn’t just a business—it’s a reflection of that decision.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning a business is definitely not a smooth road. You wear every hat, you’re constantly figuring things out as you go, and there’s always something that needs your attention.
One of the biggest challenges for me has been balancing everything while still showing up at a high level for my clients. I care deeply about the experience I provide, so even when things get overwhelming, I don’t let that slip.
I’ve also gone through some personal challenges during this time that have really pushed me, but if anything, they’ve made me stronger, more focused, and more resilient. I’ve learned how to adapt quickly, stay solution-focused, and keep moving forward no matter what’s happening behind the scenes.
At the end of the day, challenges are just part of the journey. They’ve shaped how I run my business and how I show up—not just as a designer, but as a person.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At the end of the day, I’m not just designing a space—I’m helping create the backdrop for people’s lives. It’s where families wake up together on Christmas morning, where they gather around the table, where they laugh, cry, celebrate, and simply be together.
Every detail matters because every memory made in that space matters.
To me, it’s about creating a home that holds meaning—one that reflects not just how it looks, but how it feels to live in it. A place where everyday moments, big celebrations, and even the quiet in-between become part of something truly special.
It’s an honor to be part of that journey and to help design a home that will carry those memories for years to come.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something that might surprise people is how long it took me to make the decision to leave my corporate career and build something of my own.
For about two years, I knew I wanted more. I knew I was meant to create something that felt aligned with who I really was—but walking away from something stable isn’t easy. Once I made that decision, though, I didn’t look back.
I’ve always been the type of person that, if I believe in something, I will do everything in my power to make it happen—and that carries directly into my work today.
When a client hires me, they’re putting a lot of trust in me. Building or renovating a home can be overwhelming, and it’s not just about how it looks—it’s about how they feel throughout the process. I take that seriously. I’m there to guide them, support them, and help eliminate as much stress as possible.
At the end of the day, I don’t give up easily—on my business or on my clients. If I believe in the vision, I will do everything I can to bring it to life in a way that feels right for them.
