Meet Michael Thomas of MKT Ventures, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Thomas.

Michael Thomas

Hi Michael, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a proud product of North Baltimore’s Govans community—a close-knit neighborhood that instilled in me the values of pride and communal responsibility. My foundation was built at home: my mother taught me to read at just two years old, and by the time I entered kindergarten, I was already well ahead of my peers. Beyond academics, she—alongside my grandmother—gifted me an internal moral compass and a clear sense of right from wrong that has guided every decision since.

While most children were focused on sports or toys, I was busy playing “CEO.” I was captivated by the **architecture of society**: the mechanics of business, the structure of law, and the discipline of wealth creation. Because I learned to read so early, I was able to teach myself how to read stock periodicals and immerse myself in every book or magazine I could find on investing as a young boy. This early ambition secured me a legal internship in the ninth grade under the mentorship of the **Honorable Judge John Carroll Byrnes**, where I learned that excellence isn’t merely a single act; it is a personal standard.

The Power of Sacrifice: A 22-Year-Old’s Leap
After graduating with honors from Baltimore City Public Schools, my journey was defined by grit. I spent my days **working full-time at a corporate job** and my nights in community college classrooms. This was the season of the “hustle,” but it was also the season of sacrifice.

While many of my peers were spending their hard-earned money on new cars, designer clothes, or weekend entertainment, I was focused on a different finish line. I chose to save every penny. At just 22 years old, I took a leap of faith that changed the trajectory of my life: **I purchased my first home in Parkville.** Choosing homeownership at a young age was the best decision I ever made. That house became my laboratory; it taught me discipline, equity, and the true meaning of building from the ground up. I eventually built a successful rental portfolio in Baltimore City, mastering the housing business hands-on long before I ever earned a real estate license.

Bridging Corporate Efficiency and Community Need
As I ascended into managerial roles for **Fortune 500 organizations**, I continued to prioritize my education, earning a B.S. from **Morgan State University** and an MBA from **Strayer University**. However, I never forgot my roots. I sought out the **Baltimore Corps Fellowship** to bridge the gap between corporate efficiency and community needs, managing major projects throughout Baltimore County. I believe a leader’s education is never complete; in 2025, I earned my **AI for Professionals Certificate** from Towson University to stay at the cutting edge of where technology meets the real estate industry.

A Legacy of Service: “Be Encouraged”
Today, I operate at a unique intersection of commerce and consultancy. I am a Realtor with **Smart Realty, LLC**, and the CEO of **MKT Ventures, LLC**, where I specialize in real estate compliance and organizational training. My expertise has led me to serve on the **Maryland Real Estate Commission** and currently as a Governor-appointed Commissioner on the **Maryland Home Improvement Commission**.

Despite these professional milestones, my greatest source of pride is my family—being a husband and raising my son. I also cherish the eight years I spent as an **Adjunct Professor at Morgan State University**, pouring into the next generation.

To the youth of Baltimore, my message is simple: **Do not be afraid to sacrifice the “now” for the “next.”** I want you to look at my story and see that literacy, character, and homeownership are the cornerstones of wealth and stability. It changed my life at 22, and it can change yours too. **”Be encouraged.”**

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While my career today is defined by leadership and community service, the road to this point was paved with obstacles that only grit could overcome. My journey was built through hard work and determination rather than being handed to me.

I worked full-time while putting myself through undergraduate and graduate school, balancing the physical demands of labor with the mental rigor of higher education. This required a level of discipline that was often exhausting. Furthermore, buying my first home at 22 was a trial by fire. Navigating the complexities of the home-buying process and homeownership entirely on my own taught me lessons through experience and perseverance.

These challenges taught me resilience. My message of “Be Encouraged” is more than a slogan; it is a testament to the fact that I have experienced doubt and fatigue and chose to keep building anyway.

We’ve been impressed with MKT Ventures, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
MKT Ventures is where my corporate experience meets my passion for community growth. I operate as a hybrid: a management consultant for organizations and a licensed real estate professional for individuals and investors. I like to think of my work as “business coaching with a conscience.” I help people and companies build structures that aren’t just profitable, but sustainable and legally sound.

What do you specialize in / what are you known for?
I specialize in two specific areas: Real Estate Compliance and Organizational Training & Development. In the real estate world, I’m the person you call to ensure things are done by the book. Because of my background with state commissions, I understand the “why” behind the regulations. On the organizational side, I help teams bridge the gap between where they are and where they want to be through intentional training. I’m known for taking complex, “boring” concepts—like regulatory law or corporate efficiency—and making them accessible and empowering for the people on the ground.

What sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart is that I’ve sat in every seat at the table. I’ve been the student working the night shift, the entrepreneur managing a rental in the city, the executive in a Fortune 500 boardroom, and the Commissioner appointed by the Governor to oversee tens of thousands of professionals.

Most people in my field offer either the “hustle” or the “theory.” I offer both. I can talk high-level compliance strategy in the morning and then walk a first-time investor through a property in the afternoon. I bring a technical edge—including a certification in AI—but my approach is always rooted in the values I learned growing from my family.

What are you most proud of brand-wise?
I am most proud that my brand is a source of Encouragement. I’ve spent eight years as a professor at Morgan State, and I carry that “teaching heart” into my business. I’m proud that MKT Ventures doesn’t just provide a service; we provide a standard of excellence that gives people the confidence to move forward. When a client realizes that the “intimidating” world of real estate compliance or organizational change is actually something they can master, that is my greatest success.

What do you want our readers to know about your brand, offerings, and services?
I want readers to know that excellence is accessible. Whether you need to bring your real estate practice into full compliance, or you need to revitalize your team through professional development, MKT Ventures provides the blueprint. My door is open to anyone who wants to build something meaningful. I’m here to show you that with the right architecture and a little bit of encouragement, you can reach levels you never thought possible.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I believe that finding a mentor isn’t just about identifying someone “successful”; it is about finding someone whose character and standards of excellence align with the life you are trying to build. This is not an overnight process, but rather a relationship that must be developed over time.

My own journey began with a 9th-grade internship under Judge Byrnes. That mentorship did not happen by accident—it was the result of being curious and ready to work.
