Conversations with Sierra Edwards

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Edwards.

Hi Sierra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hi, Im Sierra, makeup artist and founder of Sequined by Sierra. My journey began as a young girl, I always admired all the beautiful women in my family and in the media. What started as a fun hobby and way to express myself led me to my purpose and eventually turned into a business. I began doing my own hair and makeup at the tender age of twelve, by age sixteen I was doing the same for my friends and family. I began taking paid appointments over twenty years ago, shortly after graduating high school in 2004. Utilizing my creativity, skill and extensive knowledge of both the products and makeup process I have been able to reach so many beautiful people and sustain my business. I am proud to enhance the natural beauty of every client while empowering them to feel not only beautiful but confident and secure.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a makeup artist, I have faced so many challenges that have impacted my career and business. The best advice is to not take on more than you can handle and to be patient with yourself. While makeup is my passion, I always maintain employment that allows me to be financially stable and not so reliant on my clients for income. Unless you work in a salon or have a large clientele I would suggest keeping a job in this industry. Client management and market competition are both things you cannot control and can be very frustrating to navigate as well. Branding and marketing yourself are your biggest tools and the internet is the easiest way, so over time I have become a content creator.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a makeup artist that specializes in naturally enhancing my client’s beauty. I am well known for my soft glamour makeup. What sets me apart from others in this area is that I travel and service the entire DMV area. I also take clients of all ages, children for recitals and photos, teens for prom, women for their wedding day and even women of age who have mature skin. I am most proud of being able to provide mortuary services, allowing families to honor their loved one by sending them off glowing looking their best.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along the way is that being a professional makeup artist isn’t just about doing the makeup. Makeup application is not just one sized fit all, each person requires a different technique, product and approach. It is important to continuously learn as you go, I am always open to not just learning but mastering the latest techniques. Client relationships are essential for success; it fosters loyalty and referrals which help you both sustain and grow. Connecting with your clients, showing humility, being kind and professionalism goes a long way. Majority of my new clients have been referrals from precious clients, I am so grateful for that.
