Community Highlights: Meet Jennifer Walker of Teen Talk Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Walker.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey began in an alternative high school in St. Petersburg, Florida, teaching a psychoeducational class for at-risk girls called “Spirited Girls.” We tackled everything from substance abuse prevention to healthy communication. It was intense, heart-wrenching, and deeply meaningful work that solidified my lifelong mission: supporting teenagers through their most formative, often turbulent, years.

From there, I spent over a decade as a middle and elementary school counselor in Northern Virginia. I loved the magic of the elementary years and the complexity of middle school, eventually rising to become a Director of Counseling. However, as I climbed the ladder—especially during the challenges of the pandemic—the role shifted. I found myself buried in master schedules and administrative red tape, further and further away from the students who were the reason I started this work in the first place.

In 2022, I decided to return to my roots. While still in the school system, I launched a small side practice called Teen Talk Counseling. By that spring, I took the ultimate leap of faith: I left the security of the school system to take the practice full-time.

Today, Teen Talk Counseling has blossomed from a solo venture into a thriving group practice. Most of our therapists joined organically through school connections; because they have backgrounds in education, they truly “get” the environment where our clients spend most of their lives.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been anything but a smooth road! Transitioning from the predictable world of a school system to the unpredictable world of entrepreneurship was a massive culture shock.

When I went full-time in 2022, I was a single mom with two young kids. Walking away from a stable salary and health insurance was terrifying. There were many nights at the kitchen table covered in paperwork, wondering if I’d made a huge mistake.

I’m a counselor by trade, not a CEO. I had to teach myself everything from electronic health records and HIPAA-compliant tech to marketing. Yes, that even included making some slightly embarrassing TikToks just to let parents know I existed!

Moving from a solo practice to a group practice meant shifting from ‘doing the work’ to ‘building the system.’ This past year especially has been full of behind-the-scenes ‘un-glamorous’ work—switching databases, updating websites, and trying to create a business that is sustainable for my team, not just myself.

My own kids are now teenagers. Balancing the needs of my clients with the reality of being a present mom to my own teens is a daily exercise in humility.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Teen Talk Counseling, we provide specialized therapy for tweens, teens, and young adults, along with dedicated support for the parents who love them. We specialize in the “messy middle” of adolescence—navigating anxiety, depression, ADHD, and the intense perfectionism that often comes with growing up in a high-pressure environment like Northern Virginia. We aren’t just here to “fix” a problem; we’re here to help young people build a toolkit for life, focusing on resilience, healthy communication, and emotional regulation.

What truly sets us apart is our “school-fluent” perspective. Most of our therapists have deep roots in the school system as former school counselors or educators. We understand the language of 504 plans, IEPs, and academic burnout because we’ve sat on the other side of those desks. We know what a teen’s day-to-day life actually looks like—from the pressure of AP classes to the complexities of social media and peer dynamics. This allows us to offer practical, real-world advice that bridges the gap between the therapy office and the classroom.

I am incredibly proud of the culture we’ve built. We’ve moved away from the cold, clinical feel of traditional therapy. Our brand is built on “real talk” and authentic connection. We use humor, we stay current with teen culture, and we meet kids exactly where they are. I’m also proud of our “Progress over Perfection” philosophy. In a world that demands teens be perfect, we offer a space where it is safe to be a work in progress.

I want parents to know that you don’t have to wait for a crisis to seek support. Therapy can be a proactive way to help your teen find their voice and their footing. For the teens reading this: we aren’t here to lecture you or tell you what to do. We’re here to be in your corner, to listen without judgment, and to help you navigate the “what ifs” and the “not enoughs” so you can feel like yourself again.

For Parenting & Teen Insights:

The Ask Lisa Podcast: Dr. Lisa Damour has a great way of explaining the teen brain that is so validating for parents. I often recommend her episodes to families who are struggling to understand why their teen is reacting a certain way.

Books by Brené Brown: Specifically, The Gifts of Imperfection. In Northern Virginia, perfectionism is a huge hurdle for both teens and parents. Her work on vulnerability and ‘shame-resilience’ is a cornerstone of how I approach therapy.

Robin Shapiro: I am a huge fan of her work. While I’m not an EMDR therapist, I find her ‘Easy Ego State’ approach and her focus on practical, trauma-informed care to be a total game-changer. Her books remind me to stay flexible and creative when helping teens navigate the ‘stuck’ parts of their lives.

The Private Practice Startup Podcast: This was a lifesaver during my transition to business owner.
