Community Highlights: Meet Rosemary Orok Oyo of Teddies Afrique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosemary Orok Oyo.

Hi Rosemary, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Teddies Afrique was born from a place of faith, purpose, and resilience. Back home in Nigeria, I owned a boutique where I styled clients and sold ready-made fashion pieces. But deep inside, I always dreamed of having my own custom brand, one that would reflect African culture, luxury, and creativity.

When I relocated to the United States in 2016, life felt like starting all over again. I prayed and trusted God to guide me on what to do in this new land. It was during that season of prayer that the Holy Spirit led it in my heart to go into fashion design.

At the time, I didn’t know how to sew, but I obeyed that nudge. I started learning through YouTube tutorials, practicing day and night, and trusting God for grace to master each step. That obedience became the foundation of Teddies Afrique.

The name “Teddies” came from my high school nickname, meaning dear, someone comforting and loving, while “Afrique” honors my heritage and roots. Together, it represents a brand that blends faith, culture, and elegance.

Today, Teddies Afrique designs custom bridal and Afrocentric pieces while also giving back through sewing classes for seniors, adults, and young people, using sewing as a tool for empowerment and healing.

What started as a whispered instruction from the Holy Spirit has become a purpose-driven brand that stitches together creativity, culture, and community, one design at a time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. When I started Teddies Afrique, I was in a new country, learning everything from scratch, how to sew, how to build a brand, and how to balance it all as a mother.

I faced many challenges in the early years, from financial limitations and lack of resources to teaching myself sewing through YouTube tutorials late into the night. There were moments of uncertainty, but I kept trusting God’s guidance and holding onto the vision He placed in my heart.

Just when the business was beginning to gain recognition and stability, I went through a divorce. That season was emotionally and mentally draining, and it slowed down my progress for a while. But even in that difficult period, I found strength in my faith and in the purpose behind my work.

What could have broken me instead refined me. The challenges shaped my resilience, deepened my compassion, and strengthened my desire to empower others through Teddies Afrique, proving that even in life’s toughest moments, something beautiful can still rise from the ashes.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Teddies Afrique ?
Teddies Afrique is a faith-inspired fashion brand that celebrates African culture through luxury, craftsmanship, and purpose. We specialize in custom bridal, prom, and special occasion designs that merge African heritage with modern sophistication, from couture corseted gowns to Afro-luxury statement pieces.

What sets us apart is the heart behind what we do. Every creation carries a story of faith, resilience, and identity. Beyond fashion, Teddies Afrique is also a social-impact brand. We use sewing as a tool for healing and empowerment through programs that serve seniors, adults, and youth in partnership with Montgomery County Recreation and other community organizations. These classes promote creativity, self-expression, and confidence, transforming sewing into therapy and purpose.

I’m most proud of how Teddies Afrique has evolved into more than a clothing line, it’s a movement that uplifts others. Our impact has been recognized by Meta, who featured our story for small business growth and community service, and through the FedEx Boostcamp Program, where we were selected and trained as a grant recipient to scale our vision.

At its core, Teddies Afrique stands for style with soul, creating designs that don’t just adorn the body but also inspire hope, faith, and cultural pride.

What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is seeing purpose come to life, both in me and in others. There’s a deep joy I feel when I watch someone discover their potential, create something meaningful, or believe in themselves again because of an opportunity or class I helped create.

Designing also brings me happiness because it’s more than fashion to me, it’s ministry through creativity. Each time I complete a piece or watch a student finish their first project, I’m reminded that I’m walking in the path God designed for me.

I find happiness in the simple moments too, the laughter during sewing classes, the excitement of a client trying on her dress, and the quiet assurance that my journey, though not perfect, is purposeful. Knowing that what I do impacts lives and brings beauty, confidence, and hope into the world truly makes my heart full.
