Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Awoke.
Hi Maya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always had a love for makeup. In my early teens, I was obsessed with watching YouTube beauty creators and would spend hours learning techniques, product tips, and different styles. That’s really where my passion began. What started as admiration quickly turned into experimentation, and I found so much joy in creating looks on myself.
In 2020, during the pandemic, I decided to start a makeup page. At the time, it was just a creative outlet, a place to post the looks I was doing on myself during quarantine. I didn’t have a big plan. I simply wanted to share what I loved. But that small step turned into something much bigger than I expected.
In 2021, I officially started doing makeup professionally. Since then, I’ve grown not just in skill, but in confidence and purpose. What means the most to me now isn’t just the glam, it’s creating a safe and comfortable space where every girl who sits in my chair feels seen, heard, and beautiful. I love transforming faces, whether it’s soft glam or creative looks, but more than anything, I love helping people feel confident and comfortable in their own skin.
This journey started with passion and continues to grow with purpose, and I’m so excited for what’s ahead.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Working on something as personal and important as someone’s face comes with a lot of responsibility. One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to meet everyone’s different needs and expectations. Every client is unique, and what feels like the perfect amount of makeup to one person might feel like too much or too little to someone else.
It can be especially challenging when working with clients who don’t normally wear makeup. For them, even a natural look can feel like a big change. I’ve had to really learn how to listen, ask the right questions, and adjust my approach so they still feel like themselves, just enhanced. Creating that balance between what looks great on camera or in person and what feels comfortable to the client has been a learning process.
Over time, those challenges have helped me grow. They’ve taught me patience, communication, and how important it is to create a calm, safe space where people can be honest about what they like and don’t like. Every experience, even the difficult ones, has made me a better artist.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a makeup artist who specializes in soft glam looks, which is what I’m most known for. I love creating that perfect balance where the makeup enhances your features, looks polished and glowy, but still feels effortless and not overdone. Soft glam will always have my heart because it’s timeless, flattering, and makes people feel like the best version of themselves.
At the same time, I’m really proud of my range. I can work with someone who barely wears makeup and wants something super minimal and natural, and I can also deliver a full glam look with bold lashes and full coverage. Being able to adjust my technique and intensity based on the person in my chair is something I take a lot of pride in. Not every artist can move seamlessly between minimal and full glam, and I truly believe my range is unmatched.
What sets me apart is how much I focus on the experience as well as the final look. I make it a priority that every client feels comfortable, heard, and confident throughout the process. It’s not just about applying makeup, it’s about understanding the person, their comfort level, and their vision, then bringing it to life in a way that still feels authentic to them.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I would just say that if you’re thinking about starting something creative, do it. I started my page with no big plan, just posting looks during quarantine because I loved makeup. I didn’t know where it would take me, and now it’s something I’m truly proud of. You don’t have to have everything figured out to begin.
I’m also really grateful for every person who has supported me, booked with me, shared my work, or even just liked a post. Every bit of support has helped me grow. I’m excited to continue building, meeting new faces, and creating looks that make people feel confident and beautiful in their own skin. This is only the beginning for me.
