Meet Roger Whyte of Stratus Firm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roger Whyte.

Roger, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I didn’t set out with a grand plan to start a company. I was working as an in-house event planner, and over time I began to see an opportunity to approach events differently—more creatively, more strategically, and with a higher level of production value. When I decided to take the leap, my former employer became my first client. That gave me the foundation and the confidence to begin building what would eventually become Stratus Firm.

This year we’re celebrating 15 years in business, and the growth still surprises me when I stop to think about it. What started as a team of one has grown into a team of 18 talented people, each bringing their own expertise and perspective. Along the way, we’ve produced everything from intimate executive gatherings to large-scale conferences and public events, and each project has shaped who we are as a company.

Of course, the path hasn’t been linear. The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on our industry, and like many event companies, we had to make a difficult and immediate pivot to virtual and online experiences. It was one of the hardest periods we’ve faced, but it also pushed us to innovate and expand our capabilities in ways that continue to benefit our clients today. Looking back, those challenges reinforced something I’ve always believed: resilience and creativity are often the same skill, just applied under pressure.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like any business, there have been moments that felt incredibly challenging at the time. The biggest, without question, was the COVID-19 pandemic. It was something entirely out of our control, and it brought our industry to a near standstill almost overnight. We had to rethink everything we did and pivot quickly into virtual and online events. It was a difficult period, but it also forced us to innovate, and some of the practices and capabilities we developed then still shape how we work today.

Beyond that, I’ve learned that in the course of running a business, things happen—sometimes big things, sometimes small things, but they always feel bigger in the moment. One perspective that’s helped me is realizing that many problems that feel overwhelming today look very different six months later. Time has a way of clarifying what really matters and what can be solved with patience and steady work.

If there’s one thing I’ve tried to prioritize through all of it, it’s building a great team. Hiring the best people you can, and then trusting them to use their creativity and talents, makes all the difference. Events are a collaborative art form, and the strength of our team has carried us through both the exciting moments and the difficult ones.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Stratus Firm?
Stratus Firm is an event production company at its core, but what we really do is design and produce experiences that bring people together in meaningful ways. Over the years, we’ve grown far beyond traditional event planning. Our team includes producers, designers, project managers, and creative specialists who lead everything from multi-day conferences and executive summits to large-scale galas, fundraisers, and broadcast productions. We often tell clients that we don’t just plan events—we produce them, end to end, with a focus on both the creative vision and the precision required to execute it well.

What sets us apart is how closely we partner with our clients. We’re not interested in being a vendor who shows up, delivers a checklist, and leaves. We aim to become an extension of the team, helping shape not just how an event looks, but what it accomplishes. That means thinking strategically about audience, messaging, and experience, while also managing the thousands of small details that determine whether an event feels seamless or stressful.

One of the things I’m most proud of is our team. Event production is, in many ways, the collaboration Olympics. Every project involves clients, venues, technical partners, designers, fabricators, and dozens of other contributors who all have to move in sync, often under very tight timelines. Watching a dedicated group of professionals come together and create something extraordinary in just a few weeks never gets old. It’s demanding work, but it’s also deeply rewarding.

Brand-wise, what matters most to me is that Stratus stands for trust, creativity, and calm under pressure. We want clients to know that when they bring us in, they’re getting a team that cares as much about the outcome as they do. Our ambition is to continue raising the bar and to become the premier event production company in the DMV region—not just in scale, but in the quality of the work, the experience we deliver, and the relationships we build along the way.

Any big plans?
We’ve been fortunate to continue growing year over year, and a big focus for us now is making sure we grow thoughtfully. As the team gets larger and the work becomes more complex, success isn’t just about working harder—it’s about working smarter. That means building the right systems, processes, and tools to support the level of production and service our clients expect.

This year, we’re also investing in how we present ourselves to the world. We’ll be launching a new website in the first quarter, which we’re excited about. It’s an opportunity to better tell our story, showcase our work, and reflect who we’ve become as a company over the last 15 years.

Looking ahead, one of the biggest changes I see shaping our future is technology, particularly the rapid evolution of AI. We’re paying close attention to how these tools can help us work more efficiently, unlock new creative possibilities, and ultimately serve our clients better. I see it less as a replacement for what we do and more as a force multiplier—something that helps talented people move faster, think bigger, and spend more time on the work that really matters.

What I’m most looking forward to, though, is continuing to build the team and the culture. Growth is exciting, but building a place where creative, driven people can do their best work—that’s the part that keeps me energized about what’s ahead.

Pricing:

  • Because every event we produce is different, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all price. Our work is bespoke, with budgets that reflect the scale, complexity, and objectives of each project—from intimate executive meetings to multi-day conferences and large-scale productions. We work closely with clients early on to understand their goals and resources, then build a thoughtful scope and budget that aligns with what they’re trying to achieve. Our focus is always on delivering the greatest impact and value for the investment, rather than forcing projects into a standard pricing model.
