Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Smith.
Hi Heidi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My professional background is varied. I began my career in medicine, returned to it after 9/11, and then spent much of my adult life in corporate sales, marketing, and workforce development. From 2014 to 2024, I led teams supporting businesses throughout Anne Arundel and Prince George’s Counties.
Even during those years, I would occasionally find myself thinking about owning my own business, specifically one focused on hair removal. I had researched electrology in the past, but I mistakenly believed a nursing degree was required in Maryland since the field is overseen by the Maryland Board of Nursing.
In February 2023, I was at a routine electrolysis appointment with my electrologist, Debbie Larson. She mentioned she was preparing for retirement and looking for someone to purchase her practice, Ruth Allen & Associates. In that same conversation, she clarified that a nursing degree was not required to become an electrologist. That conversation changed everything.
Within weeks, I enrolled at the Maryland Electrolysis Education Center in Laurel, began my coursework, and later left my corporate role to complete the clinical training. I passed my Board exams in early 2025 and officially purchased the practice in May 2025.
What began as a fleeting thought became a deliberate and deeply fulfilling entrepreneurial journey.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I purchased the practice from Debbie, I stepped into an established and deeply respected client base. Debbie and her mother built an outstanding reputation not only in Annapolis, but throughout the surrounding region. That foundation of trust was invaluable as I transitioned into ownership.
At the same time, stepping into leadership required me to learn every aspect of running the practice, from inventory systems and sterilization protocols to scheduling platforms and financial oversight. I transitioned the office from paper scheduling to a digital system and implemented updated equipment and operational systems that aligned with my long-term vision.
The first year required long hours. Initially, I worked six days a week while finding my rhythm as both clinician and business owner. Learning sustainable work/life balance has been an ongoing lesson, one that has strengthened both the business and me personally.
Another significant milestone was relocating the practice. I quickly realized that the original rental structure did not align with my long-term goals. Finding a space that met Maryland Board of Nursing requirements while remaining convenient for clients required patience and persistence. Ultimately, I secured a larger office space in Annapolis that aligns with the professional environment I was seeking and better reflects the direction of the practice.
Perhaps the most meaningful decision was rebranding. I have deep respect for what Debbie and her mother built as Ruth Allen & Associates. At the same time, it was important for me to establish my own professional identity. On January 1, 2026, Smith Electrology officially launched. It represents the kind of practice I believe in and the kind of professional I strive to be.
Entrepreneurship has stretched me in every way, but each challenge has strengthened my commitment to excellence and to carrying forward the trust that has long defined this practice.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a licensed electrologist specializing in permanent hair removal. Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal, and it works by delivering a precise electrical current through a fine probe inserted into each individual hair follicle. Each hair is treated one at a time, which requires both technical accuracy and patience.
While the science behind electrology is fascinating, what truly drives me is the impact it has on people’s lives.
I work with women experiencing hormonal facial hair, men dealing with chronic ingrown or infected follicles, individuals navigating gender transition, and many others simply seeking a permanent solution to unwanted hair. For some, it’s about convenience. For others, it’s deeply personal. Either way, unwanted hair can affect confidence, comfort, and daily life.
My tagline, “Goodbye Hair, Hello Happiness,” reflects what I see every day: relief, peace, and renewed self-confidence. Unwanted hair can carry embarrassment, frustration, or even shame. Watching that weight lift as treatment progresses is one of the most meaningful parts of my work.
I’m known for attention to detail and for creating an environment where clients feel at ease. Electrolysis requires trust. Sessions can be long, and progress is gradual. I take that responsibility seriously. I focus on clinical precision, safety, and ensuring each person feels respected and cared for.
What sets me apart is the balance between medical professionalism and genuine compassion. I follow Maryland Board of Nursing standards and prioritize safety, cleanliness, and the overall patient experience. I never forget that each appointment represents someone placing their trust in me.
I’m especially proud of the launch of Smith Electrology, from the rebrand to the new office space and the overall experience I’ve worked to create. Creating an environment that feels calm, professional, and intentional has been deeply meaningful. It reflects how I want my patients to feel every time they walk through the door.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’m a big believer that if I don’t take care of myself, I can’t properly care for others. For me, self-care isn’t just about spa days. It’s about growing through reading, therapy, reflection, laughter, and rest.
I listen to a lot of audiobooks through Audible. I tend to gravitate toward personal growth, leadership, and practical life topics, but I also enjoy legal thrillers and murder mysteries. I’m always looking for ways to improve my decision-making, manage my time and money well, and communicate effectively while genuinely seeking to understand others
Maintaining my license requires continuing education, but I don’t stop there. I stay connected with other electrologists, follow best practices, and continually look for ways to improve how I work and care for my patients.
Doing my best in life and business means caring for myself, caring well for others, and never assuming I’ve finished growing. The resources I gravitate toward help keep me grounded and moving forward.
