Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Koloski.
Hi Lindsay, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My path into design and architecture began much earlier than any formal education. As a child, I spent countless hours watching my parents restore an 1890s farmhouse in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. What may have felt like a long, ongoing project to others became a formative experience for me. I was fascinated by how each decision required both creativity and logic—how beauty had to work hand-in-hand with structure, history, and practicality.
That early exposure sparked a deep appreciation for old homes and their inherent character. I fell in love with the idea that no two historic houses are ever the same. Each one carries layers of stories, craftsmanship, and quirks that deserve to be understood rather than erased. I quickly learned that part of a designer’s role is not just to create something new, but to uncover and honor the hidden charm that already exists.
Driven by that passion, I went on to study architecture with a double major in historical preservation. My education gave me a strong technical foundation while reinforcing the responsibility that comes with working on historic structures—respecting their past while thoughtfully planning for their future.
After graduating, I moved to Washington, D.C., where I worked for a preservation company specializing in historic properties. That experience was invaluable. It allowed me to work hands-on with significant buildings and deepen my understanding of how preservation principles translate into real-world projects.
Eventually, that combination of early influence, education, and professional experience led me to start my own business. Today, my work focuses on restoring historic homes in a way that supports modern family life—balancing function, comfort, and contemporary needs while preserving the soul of the original structure. For me, the most rewarding part of this work is helping families fall in love with their homes by revealing the beauty that was there all along.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been entirely smooth, but in many ways that’s part of what makes it so rewarding. The design side of the work and collaborating closely with families has been incredibly fulfilling. As a designer, I’m invited into very personal spaces—both physically and emotionally—and I often see parts of my clients’ lives that even their closest friends don’t. When clients feel comfortable opening up and trusting me, it allows me to do my job at a much deeper level and truly design spaces that reflect who they are, not just how they live.
Of course, like any career, there have been bumps along the way. I’m constantly evaluating whether I’m on the right path, reassessing my goals, and learning from challenges as they arise. Growth rarely happens without a bit of discomfort.
As a woman business owner in the construction field, I often bring a different perspective than some of my colleagues, and the jobsite is where that perspective is backed up through action. While challenging moments inevitably arise, they push me to be more thoughtful, prepared, and deliberate. I focus on earning trust through clear communication, consistency, and follow-through, striving to be intentional in every aspect of our work—from how projects are approached to how we conduct business—so that integrity, care, and purpose guide every decision.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Brickhouse Design and Build?
My business specializes in the thoughtful restoration and renovation of historic homes, with a focus on adapting them to meet the modern needs of today’s families without losing their original character. We work at the intersection of architecture, interior design, and construction, which allows us to approach projects holistically—from initial concept through execution.
What sets us apart is our deep respect for old homes and the stories they carry. Every historic property has its own personality, and rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all aesthetic, we take the time to understand what makes each home special. Our process is rooted in research, careful planning, and craftsmanship, ensuring that original details are preserved whenever possible and seamlessly integrated with modern functionality.
We are known for creating spaces that feel timeless rather than trendy—homes that honor their past while supporting the way families actually live today. Whether it’s reworking a floor plan for better flow, restoring architectural details, or introducing contemporary systems and finishes, our goal is always balance.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the trust our clients place in us. We’re invited into very personal spaces, and that level of confidence is something we take seriously. Our clients know we are thoughtful, detail-oriented, and committed to doing things the right way, even when that means taking the more challenging path.
What I want readers to know is that our work is deeply personal. We’re not just restoring houses—we’re helping families build meaningful lives within them. Our brand is defined by intention, integrity, and a genuine love for historic homes, and that philosophy guides every project we take on.
