Inspiring Conversations with Roshni Rehman of Nourished by Roshni Skin Esthetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roshni Rehman.

Hi Roshni, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I always struggled to imagine the perfect career for me. I had varying interests, but none seemed “good enough” to provide financial stability and bring me joy (so long as I was someone else’s employee). I followed the traditional path and went to George Mason University straight out of high school. I was always a 4.0 GPA student, and my work ethic showed that. However, I felt lost in my options when it came down to committing to my lifetime career at the unripe age of eighteen.

I declared my major in criminology, with a minor in forensic psychology. Heavily empathetic, I was interested in why people are they way they are, why criminals do bad things, why victims are targeted, and why we all emotionally react differently to various stimuli. Becoming a forensic psychologist finally felt like something I was meant to do! Then the pandemic hit.
I was in my last semester at GMU when we left for spring break in 2020 and never came back. Completing my degree through Zoom classes and never being able to walk the stage for graduation left a mark on me about how anything can happen and the “traditional” path ultimately does not guarantee you success in life. COVID made life hard and unpredictable. Jobs were not hiring, places were shut down, and I was mentally drained. I ultimately was able to find a job in 2021, however it was not in my field and it was an extremely toxic work place. I felt microaggressions, micromanaged, and macro-hopeless. This was the full time work people dreamed of?

After 2 years of a depressing situation, I knew things had to change. I left my job and with the support of my parents, was able to take some time to think about how I wanted my life to go. My goal: be happy, healthy, and feel fulfilled. Eventually I realized what all my friends and family knew from the start. I was meant to be a skincare expert and in the beauty industry.

At the age of 13, I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). PCOS causes symptoms to show externally, including acne, facial hair, weight gain, and much more. All of these things are bound to make a young girl struggle with her self esteem. So I did what I had to do to make myself feel better. I researched, educated myself, and taught myself how to get my acne under control along with wellness practices for an overall pleasant and confident life. Makeup and skincare were always something I was interested in and good at. I was the friend that people would ask for skin and makeup advice.
At the age of 25, I enrolled in esthetics school and decided the only thing that makes sense is for me to have my own esthetics business.

The passion was always there but I was initially unsure about this path due to its nontraditional nature. However, the reminder that anything can happen to alter your journey stuck with me. My goals have felt extremely aligned with starting my own business. I want my clients to see that the person they are trusting with their face actually cares about them. Now, I am a Master Esthetician with over 1200 hours of esthetic education, and value constant learning. On top of sharing my passion with the world, I love that I can meet new people, hear their own stories, and help their confidence. Esthetics is a way for me to combine my love for beauty and people, and with my own business practice, I am able to present services the way I choose to. I am strict on infection control, being detail oriented, and am able to cater more time to truly hear my clients. If I was to work for somebody else, my work ethic would have been wasted making someone else successful when I am more than capable of bringing myself success with the amount of work and dedication I put in. When you have this type of drive, it cannot be taken from you.

Thus, Nourished by Roshni Skin Esthetics was born! I am currently located right across from George Mason University in University Mall (Fairfax, VA). My career path was truly a full circle moment. I am so proud of my degree and further education which led me to be where I am today. I find genuine joy hearing my clients consistently be wow’ed for the way I take care of them. Nothing has been more validating than seeing the fruits of your labor, and others confirming the sweet ripeness of that fruit. My support system throughout this journey has been vital. With passion, support, dedication, and perseverance, life will bring you what you are looking for.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been smooth. You cannot expect immediate success and you have to accept that failure and change is a part of the process. I have to remind myself that there are good days and bad days, but the good days will always make the bad days worth it. The more you learn, the better you and your business will come out to be. Marketing has been a bit difficult for me, but I’m doing my best to get the word out about my business and my intention.
