Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Deepan Chatterjee.
Hi Dr. Chatterjee, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started off in this country as an immigrant almost 30 years ago with a full scholarship to Bethany College in West Virginia for an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Mathematics. I was awarded several prestigious prizes at Bethany, including the W.F. Kennedy Award for the Most Outstanding Junior in 1999 and both the top prizes in Psychology and Biology. I graduated Summa Cum Laude in May 2000 and started a doctoral program in Clinical Psychology at the Howard University Department of Psychology in Fall the same year.
At Howard, I was a Teaching Assistant in Statistics and a Research Assistant in the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program through the National Institute of Mental Health – Howard University Department of Psychiatry joint program. I graduated from Howard with distinction on my Comprehensive exams in 2007 with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. Thereafter, I completed a pre-doctoral internship and postdoctoral residency at Patuxent Institution, a maximum-security correctional facility located in Jessup. Maryland.
I joined an outpatient practice in 2008, and throughout the years have worked at several hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, inpatient hospital units as well as outpatient practices providing psychiatric evaluation, consultation, psychotherapy and med management services, among others.
I started my own outpatient practice, the Center for Behavioral Health and Wellness in 2021. Since our inception, we have provided comprehensive psychiatric services, including medication management, psychotherapy, psychiatric evaluations and transcranial magnetic stimulation to over 350 patients. My practice was recognized for its outstanding service to the community by Howard County Executive, Dr. Calvin Ball in 2023. We were also featured on the Howard County Economic Development Authority newsletter in June 2025 (https://howardcountyeda.org/mental-health-catalyst/).
In the past, I have served on the Board of Directors for both the Maryland Psychological Association, as well as the American Psychological Association as Treasurer. I have also been elected a Fellow of the Maryland Psychological Association.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Hell no. There have been several obstacles and challenges along the way, including truant practicum directors at practicum sites while completing my doctoral program, the death of my grandmother and mother while competing my education, as well as going through the byzantine legal immigration process in the US, from being on a student visa, to a work visa, multiple renewals of visas, green card , etc. with regular vetting at every stage. Right now, my dad is bedridden in India, and it’s been difficult to manage his health, banking, and other affairs while being so far away from him.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are an immigrant-owned outpatient mental health clinic in Howard County offering comprehensive mental health services to the community, including psychiatric evaluations, medication management, psychotherapy and transcranial magnetic stimulation services. We put an emphasis on the wholeness of the patient and combine Eastern and Western treatment methods such as mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral therapy, etc. We are most proud of our 5-star reviews on Google and the satisfaction of so many patients, who on completion of their journey with us, have mentioned that we have given their life back to them.
What does success mean to you?
Success is temporary, class is permanent. People will forget what you do. They will never forget what you do for them.
