Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Johnson.
Hi Stephanie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, I’m Stephanie Johnson—and I’m here to change the face of hair care.
I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, in a home that valued hard work, family, and integrity. Detroit has always been known for beauty, style, and especially hair, so growing up surrounded by that culture made it easy for me to fall in love with cosmetology early on.
My first real inspiration was my mother’s best friend—a beautiful, stylish salon owner who was the only person who ever did my hair. I used to stand next to her chair in awe, watching her transform people with nothing but her hands, product, and skill. I knew right then this was my path.
I trained at Virginia Farrell Beauty School in Detroit and later sharpened my craft at the Pivot Point Academy in Chicago. Like many new stylists, I struggled at first—especially with haircuts and color—but with time, practice, and persistence, my confidence grew. That journey taught me something important early on: mastery takes patience.
My career took me across the country—from Detroit to San Diego, New York, and eventually the DC area—where I opened my salon, The Hair Care Company, in Camp Springs, Maryland, in 2000. Along the way, I had the opportunity to work closely with industry leaders, including serving as an assistant to the Vice President of Clairol’s Crossover Division, where I gained deep, hands-on experience with color, relaxers, silk presses, and professional hair care systems.
My pivot into holistic hair care came after a chance meeting with a holistic formulator. Watching natural blends help the body heal itself opened my eyes—and I knew I wanted to do the same for the hair and scalp. That decision led me to study trichology and holistic formulation, and eventually to becoming a Certified Trichologist in 2008. I began studying how food, medication, stress, and environment impact scalp health—and everything I thought I knew about hair care shifted.
Then life made it personal.
After being diagnosed with a chronic condition and prescribed an oral chemotherapy pill, my scalp became dry, flaky, and patchy. I lost hair and wore a wig. For 18 months, I followed medical advice and saw a dermatologist, but nothing worked. That’s when I decided to trust my own training. I researched every prescription I’d been given, adjusted my approach, and within weeks, my scalp began to heal. Within months, it was fully restored.
That experience changed everything.
I began applying my holistic and trichology-based knowledge to my clients—with incredible results. Clients wanted take-home products. Then, custom blends. Then, shelf-ready solutions. What started behind the chair turned into product development, education, and transformation.
In 2019, I launched The Holistic Hairstylist Accelerator Certification Program, where I teach licensed hair care professionals how to create all-natural scalp treatments, develop their own product lines, increase their income, and position themselves as trusted experts. My approach blends science, holistic care, and real-world application—because today’s clients want solutions, not quick fixes.
At the same time, I realized something just as important: women needed access to trustworthy hair care education without gatekeeping.
That’s why I created the Hair Care Company Inner Circle—a free community for women of African descent, created for both consumers and professionals. Inside the Inner Circle, I share education, practical hair and scalp tips, interviews, product recommendations, and real conversations about caring for our hair with intention and understanding. It’s a space rooted in empowerment, not confusion—and everyone is welcome, whether you’re behind the chair or simply want healthier hair.
Today, I continue to serve through education, content, and community. I’m the author of The Black Woman’s Guide to Healthy Hair, I create ongoing educational content online, and I remain deeply committed to helping women and hair care professionals make informed, confident choices about their hair and scalp health.
My faith grounds everything I do. I believe teaching is my assignment, and service is my purpose. I’m funny, deeply empathetic, passionate about this industry, and committed to seeing others win.
More than anything, I want to change how we approach hair care.
I want to replace confusion with clarity.
Quick fixes with real solutions.
And outdated practices with informed, holistic care.
Because to me, it’s never just about hair.
It’s about healing, purpose, and legacy.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
After being diagnosed with a chronic condition and prescribed an oral chemotherapy pill, my scalp became dry, flaky, and patchy. I lost hair and wore a wig. For 18 months, I followed medical advice and saw a dermatologist, but nothing worked.
That was the most challenging time for me in my career. I was a professional guiding women on how to keep their hair healthy, and here I was struggling myself. I felt like a fraud. That’s when I dug into education and, as a result, developed my own product line.
