Inspiring Conversations with Dr. Anita Gadhia-Smith of Dr. Anita Gadhia-Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Anita Gadhia-Smith.

Dr. Anita Gadhia-Smith, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and attended Friends School and then Johns Hopkins University. After attending John Hopkins, I was a bartender at the famous Club Charles, and then became involved in the underworld of alcoholism and drug addiction. After struggling to recover on my own, I moved to Washington DC in 1989 after securing a teaching fellowship at the Catholic University of America. The following year, I got clean and sober and have remained so for 35 years. I went back to school and became a psychotherapist after being sober for a few years and went on to write seven books, and be an international speaker about addiction and recovery on TV, radio, and television.. I still currently practiced my profession as a psychotherapist in Georgetown, Washington DC.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The struggles that I had in early life in my family of origin were profound, and created a lot of trauma and emotional and psychological obstacles early in my life, which set me up to start using drugs and alcohol at the age of 11. After getting sober at the age of 27, I slowly worked through most of the struggles, peeling back the layers of the onion one at a time.
