Hidden Gems: Meet Talisa White of Madison Creative Marketing Solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Talisa White.

Hi Talisa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
From an early age, I knew I was meant to be an entrepreneur. I did not yet know what business I would one day create, but the spirit was always there. By age 12, I was making money doing hair for all the kids in my neighborhood. At 14, I was managing a local ice cream shop, opening and closing the store, operating the security system, and being trusted to balance the register each night. Those early experiences made one thing clear: when I became an adult, I had to run my own business.

After high school, I started college at Howard University. If you guessed my major was Business Administration, you are right. I chose it because I wanted a foundation that would support any future business idea, although I would not actually formalize that idea until much later.

Fast forward to graduation, when I received a surprise gift: a baby on the way. At the time, I was still doing hair and working at a local grocery store. I had two immediate goals: enroll in graduate school and secure a career-type job before it became obvious I was expecting, so that I could better support this new life.

One month after graduating from college, I landed a role at a local nonprofit as an Assistant in the External Affairs Department, which was essentially Marketing and Communications. My role focused on data entry and supporting the VP of External Affairs and the External Affairs Manager with related tasks. It was not the job I had imagined, but it was salaried, came with benefits, and was exactly what I needed at the time.

Although my role was administrative, I found the work we were doing interesting and began inquiring about a more hands-on role. The VP saw my potential and drive and nurtured it. That is when everything clicked: I loved marketing and communications.

Minor web updates were not enough for me, so I taught myself how to code and build websites from scratch. Managing a social media consultant sparked my curiosity, so I taught myself graphic design and Adobe Creative Suite. Supporting newsletters led me to writing articles and learning full print layout, design, and production.

Eventually, the Manager left and I was promoted to the position. Soon I was managing public awareness campaigns with celebrities, speaking to the media, and doing all the things that make marketing so energizing. I loved it so much that I started creating websites for family members, which led to referrals, social media management requests, and more. By then, I knew exactly what kind of business I would start: a digital marketing agency.

I later left that job to grow my skill set further and became a Business Development and Marketing professional for a law firm. I was excited to strengthen my proposal writing skills because a huge part of running a business is knowing how to win business. While the experience grew my technical abilities, the work environment was not the best. Difficult bosses ignited a fire in me. I wanted to do what I loved AND I wanted to create an organization where people felt valued, respected, and appreciated.

In the meantime, I continued doing websites and social media on the side, still building and still refining.

Eventually, I re-entered the nonprofit sector as a communications manager, overseeing everything from strategy to execution. It was during this time that I officially registered my business, Madison Creative Marketing Solutions. Running an entire communications department gave me the confidence to truly step into entrepreneurship.

One day, while exhibiting at a workplace giving event for my job, I noticed a neighboring nonprofit’s display. Curious, I searched the organization online on the spot and walked over to inquire about volunteering and to introduce myself to the woman running the booth, who turned out to be the Executive Director. When I mentioned that I worked in marketing, she told me her organization was seeking a marketing contractor. Just like that, Madison Creative Marketing Solutions secured its first official contract.

I continued working full time and eventually transitioned into communications work for the federal government. At the same time, my business grew, and it grew quickly. My second contract was with one of the Real Housewives of Potomac. Then came local small businesses, yoga studios, social media influencers, nonprofits, healthcare companies, and more. I eventually needed contractors, and one of my proudest accomplishments is the environment I created for them. Everyone I hired stayed for extended periods and consistently shared that working with me helped them grow in both skill and character. That means the world to me.

Today, Madison Creative Marketing Solutions is thriving. We are a full-service marketing agency offering social media management, web design, content marketing, advertising, and nearly every digital marketing service in between. My heart is with nonprofits because mission-driven work inspires me, but I also love bringing top-tier creative services to small businesses in our community.

What began as a childhood entrepreneurial spark has become a thriving agency built on passion and purpose.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Entrepreneurship isn’t a smooth road; it’s a courageous one. I was never in a position where I could quit my job and pursue entrepreneurship full time. I had a child to care for, big ambitions, and, if I’m honest, expensive taste. I needed the security of a full-time job, too.

At the same time, my business was growing rapidly. It grew to the point where I needed help and could finally afford it, eventually hiring up to three contractors at a time. But juggling entrepreneurship, a demanding full-time job, and motherhood is a lot. You have to prioritize. You have to sacrifice. For me, that meant countless late nights, squeezing in client work after bedtime and on weekends. Before I hired help, there were moments when I was so overwhelmed that my output did not always reflect my full potential, but I was only one person doing everything I could.

My business also grew solely through earned revenue. I had no credit, no grants, and no investors. That meant slower but more intentional growth, especially as I balanced the expenses of running a business with the need to market myself. I had to ration costs for things like, believe it or not, marketing for my own marketing business. Finding the right contractors added another layer of challenge. You want people you can trust to deliver work with the same care and excellence you would bring at your very best, and getting to that point involved some trial and error.

These challenges were real, but none of them stopped my business from thriving. Instead, they strengthened me. They taught me resilience, discipline, and the power of believing in a vision even when the road is not easy. Entrepreneurship has demanded a lot from me, but it has given me even more in return.

How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy, personally, is anything that fills my life with peace, connection, and joy. My family is a big source of happiness— they encourage me, love me, support me, and create a sense of comfort and grounding that makes navigating the world a little easier. I’m also a firm believer in self-care, so pedicures, massages, vacations, and good sleep absolutely make me happy. They allow me to recharge, reset, and pour back into myself so I can show up as my best self. Those moments of rest and renewal are part of how I sustain my energy and creativity.

Professionally, I find happiness in getting to do what I genuinely love every day. There is something incredibly fulfilling about using my marketing expertise to make an impact, especially within the nonprofit sector. Mission-driven work moves me, inspires me, and reminds me that my skills can help organizations change lives and strengthen communities. Beyond supporting nonprofits through my business, I also make it a priority to give back in intentional ways. Knowing that my work contributes to something larger than myself brings me deep joy and purpose.

In both my personal life and professional world, happiness comes from being aligned with what I value, what I love, and what I want to offer the world.
