Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristal Hall.
Hi Kristal, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My love for hair started at age 10 during a Saturday trip to the mall. While my mom browsed the aisles at Kmart, I got my hair done at the Regis Salon for picture day, and it changed everything. I was captivated by the energy in the salon: the beautiful Black women getting even more beautiful, the conversations, the laughter, the creativity.
After that, every Saturday I would sit on the bench outside that salon while my mom shopped. I studied every angle through the mirrors and went home to recreate the styles on my Barbie and Cabbage Patch dolls. By age 13, a local salon allowed me to shampoo on weekends. That experience cemented what I already knew: I loved the salon environment, the people, and the craft.
At 14, my dad transformed a corner of our basement into a mini salon. I found used furniture from a warehouse, connected with distributors, and even printed my first business cards at the same mall where my journey began. I styled neighborhood moms, aunties, daughters, and sisters, sometimes entire families in one day. I kept that basement salon running all through high school, and by senior year, I knew this was my career path.
My mother was determined that I attend college, so I enrolled at PGCC. But after one semester, I couldn’t ignore my calling. I created a full presentation outlining why I needed to start hair school, how I would help pay for it, and the plan I had for after graduation. Reluctantly, but lovingly she agreed. I started cosmetology school that spring while still working and maintaining my home-based clients.
Upon graduation, I went straight into a salon, moved around to gain experience, and eventually stepped out on faith to open my first salon at age 25. Once again, I went to my parents with a plan, projections, and a request for an investment. Even though none of us fully understood the journey ahead, they believed in me. My dad helped with the buildout and I taught myself the permitting process. My mom supported with the business side. At the grand opening she told me: “If I have good customer service, you will have a client for life”. I recently told her, she has been right about everything!
Years later, the business has survived market crashes, shutdowns, rebranding, relocations, and the constant evolution of our industry. Today, my work has grown far beyond traditional cosmetology. I specialize in bridging beauty with holistic wellness and functional trichology. Helping men and women fight hair loss through para-medical evaluation, scalp health, and science-based treatment plans.
My journey started with curiosity, creativity, and a bench in front of a mall salon. Now it has become a purpose-driven career dedicated to helping people heal, restore confidence, and understand their hair on a deeper level.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely, where would I begin? My journey has had its fair share of challenges. Personally, balancing motherhood, marriage, and eventually navigating life as a divorced single parent was one of the hardest parts. Trying to be present for my child while running a business and making it all look smooth on the outside was a struggle that stretched me in every direction.
Professionally, I faced hurdles that many entrepreneurs experience but don’t always talk about. Staffing challenges, relationship dynamics within the salon world, and the steep learning curve of business ownership all shaped me. Securing funding, maintaining stability during unpredictable seasons, and constantly pivoting to stay relevant tested my resilience.
Another major challenge was earning respect. Both as a young Black woman and as someone transitioning into the clinical side of hair and wellness. Building credibility in an industry that often undervalues science, data, and alternative approaches wasn’t easy, but it pushed me to sharpen my skills, refine my voice, and stand firm in my expertise.
We’ve been impressed with Glamourous Styles Hair Studio, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business, Glamourous Styles Hair Studio and Complete Hair Solutions, is a hybrid beauty-wellness practice that specializes in clinical scalp care, functional trichology, and holistic hair restoration.
I serve clients who are experiencing hair loss, scalp disorders, chronic shedding, breakage, and wellness-related concerns that show up through the hair and skin. While many salons focus solely on styling, my practice blends cosmetology, wellness, science, and data-driven diagnostics to uncover the root cause of every client’s hair concerns.
What I do and what I’m known for:
I offer a full ecosystem of services centered around hair health—from scalp microscopy and hair DNA testing to blood biomarker reviews and customized treatment plans. My clients often come to me after years of frustration, and I am known for giving them answers, clarity, and an actionable path forward.
Using tools such as Zyto bioscans, scalp mapping, nutritional guidance, and product optimization, I help clients understand the connection between internal wellness and external hair behavior. This approach has helped position me as a trusted expert in functional trichology within the DMV.
What sets my brand apart:
What sets me apart is my ability to blend clinical analysis with compassionate care. My clients don’t just receive treatments—they receive education, empowerment, and a plan tailored specifically to their biological markers, lifestyle, and long-term goals.
I also formulate and manufacture my own proprietary product line, Awaken Hair Care, designed to support scalp detoxification, hydration, and hair fiber strength. These formulas are clean, effective, and intentionally crafted to support the hair restoration journey.
What I’m most proud of:
I’m most proud of creating a safe, research-based space where clients—especially women, professionals, and individuals experiencing emotional distress from hair loss—can feel seen, supported, and guided through their healing process.
I am also proud that my work extends beyond the salon. I host educational workshops, community wellness activations, and collaborative events with local partners to help raise awareness around hair health and overall well-being.
What I want readers to know:
I want readers to know that my brand is built on purpose, integrity, and results. Whether you are experiencing hair loss, navigating a medical diagnosis, or simply wanting to understand your hair better, my clinic provides science-backed solutions and personalized care.
Our offerings include:
Clinical scalp evaluations
Hair loss treatment plans
Scalp detox + therapeutic treatments
Bloodwork & biomarker interpretation
Hair DNA + gut health testing

Ultimately, my mission is to help every client regain confidence from the inside out by addressing their hair concerns at the root—literally and clinically.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5–10 years?
I definitely see a shift happening in the beauty and haircare industry. Over the last 15+ years, social media and YouTube have dominated how consumers learn about haircare. While that has been helpful in spreading information, it has also created a gap. People are realizing that viral trends, DIY routines, and unvetted advice can’t replace true professional care.
I believe we’re entering a return-to-foundation era, 90’s vibe.
Consumers are craving the quality, consistency, and craftsmanship we saw in the 90’s. Regular salon visits, structured maintenance, proper product usage, and professional oversight. The “old school” approach wasn’t just nostalgic; it was rooted in healthy hair practices that worked.
At the same time, the industry is also becoming more clinical. We’re seeing increasing demand for trichology, scalp care, and wellness-based services. Hair loss is rising across all demographics due to stress, nutrition, environmental factors, and lifestyle changes. As a result, clients are seeking providers who understand not just styling, but science. Providers who can interpret lab data, address inflammation, and personalize treatment plans.
The biggest trends I see coming include:
A major rise in scalp health as a core part of beauty routines
More data-driven diagnostics (microscopy, DNA testing, biomarker panels)
Stronger partnerships between beauty pros and medical/wellness practitioners
A cultural return to structured salon care vs. DIY experimentation
Growth in clean, functional haircare products
More consumer education around inflammatory foods, stress, and internal wellness
I also believe the professional beauty industry will split into two clear tracks: technicians and practitioners. Technicians will focus on styling, while practitioners, like functional trichologists—will handle the science of hair and scalp disorders.
The future of haircare is a blend of tradition and innovation: bringing back the reliability and skill of classic salon culture while layering in modern diagnostics and holistic wellness. My goal is to continue leading in that space—bridging beauty and science so clients can achieve long-term, sustainable hair health.
