Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie.
Hi Katie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
If I start by telling you my degree is in animal behavior, you may wonder how I ended up in accounting…but it’s not as surprising a transition as you might think!
Yep, I wanted to be a zookeeper. However, thanks to being a bit of a wild child who loved climbing (and falling) out of trees, I soon realized my past injuries made this highly physical career a no-go. So, I worked as a vet and surgery tech at a veterinarian’s office. I then joined the Maryland SPCA in Baltimore, where I spent four years wearing many hats as an admin, vet tech, behavior assessor, foster coordinator, and adoption counselor.
My time with the shelter shaped my organizational and detail-oriented mindset. When it comes to data, my philosophy is to check as many boxes as possible. You never know when you’ll need that information later!
When my husband got a job in Frederick (my hometown), I decided to move back and make a career shift. The freedom and flexibility of business ownership appealed to me—and who better to learn from than my mom, Joanne Baum, the founder of Details Matter Bookkeeping?
I received my certification (CB) from the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB) in 2011. I worked as an administrative assistant and bookkeeper at a CPA firm to gain some experience while I was learning.
When the CPA firm was bought out by a much larger firm, I decided it was time to move on and join my mom full-time at the beginning of 2016. She became my mentor until she stepped back in 2017 and handed over the reins.
I’m proud of how my team has grown since then to include a staff of qualified bookkeepers who uphold the firm’s name with the same level of care and attention to detail!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s definitely been a journey – some smooth roads, some potholes. The biggest thing has just been making the switch from being a solopreneur to being a CEO. Instead of doing everything yourself, you’re now the manager, leader and innovator. It can sometimes be hard to let go of things, especially in the beginning. But now, my struggles are more in trying to figure out how to lead the company into prosperity and not get left in the dust!
We’ve been impressed with Details Matter Bookkeeping & Advisory, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Details Matter Bookkeeping & Advisory, we believe small business owners deserve more than data entry—they deserve clarity, understanding & empathy. We help entrepreneurs understand their numbers, make confident decisions, and build thriving businesses. From bookkeeping and payroll to strategic advisory, our team blends accuracy with insight, and professionalism with personality. Because when it comes to your business, the details really do matter.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was definitely the kid that wanted to be a veterinarian when they grew up. That somehow translated into the animal behavior path. But I was also a rough & tumble tomboy that fell out of trees and off roller skates and broke a bunch of bones. So, I’m kind of a broken adult and that was the big reason for making the career shift. I wanted to be a zookeeper, but that’s obviously a pretty physically demanding job, so that just wasn’t in the cards for me.
