Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Antonis.
Hi Matthew, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, raised by a single parent who worked incredibly hard to provide a loving home and a warm meal every night. My childhood wasn’t easy, but it shaped me.
At 14, I faced my first major life challenge: a sizable brain tumor that caused extreme headaches and nearly 75% loss of vision. The next two years were spent in and out of hospitals, enduring multiple brain surgeries and long recoveries. I missed a lot of school, lost a lot of time, and honestly — I was just grateful to be alive. Career plans weren’t on my mind back then, but I was drawn to healthcare and fascinated with Radiology.
A few years later, I earned my degree in Radiologic Science and spent over 15 years working as an X-ray Technologist. The work was meaningful and challenging, and I’m grateful for the experiences and the people I met along the way. But I always felt a pull — a desire to run my own business, create my own schedule, and build something I could grow without limits. As the medical field shifted toward longer hours, reduced flexibility, and capped income potential, that desire only grew stronger.
So in 2017, I made one of the biggest decisions of my life. I walked away from a stable career in Radiology and got licensed as a real estate agent. By that point, I had started multiple side ventures — e-commerce, small businesses, even a Radiology training company — but I always had the safety net of my “9–5.” Leaving that behind to step into commercial real estate full-time was terrifying. But with encouragement from my amazing wife and the work ethic I learned from my mother, I took the leap and never looked back.
People warned me that it could take a year or two to get established in commercial real estate. They weren’t wrong. The early days were humbling. When you first start, you feel green. You lack confidence. The truth is, the barrier to enter real estate is low — but the barrier to survive the first two years is incredibly high.
I eventually joined Friend Commercial Real Estate, where I still hang my license and operate my LLC today. The team environment there has been remarkable. It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:
“The strength of the team is the individual, and the strength of the individual is the team.” — Phil Jackson
One of my first big lessons was simple but pivotal:
You can spend the same amount of time on small deals as you can on larger ones — so focus on larger ones.
That mindset shift led to my first exclusive listing, which came from a single cold call. That call turned into a portfolio listing of small-bay industrial properties totaling 161,792 square feet across 11.73 acres and 14 buildings. I was able to represent both parties and successfully sell the entire portfolio. That deal gave me the confidence and confirmation that I had made the right move jumping into commercial real estate.
Now it’s late 2025, and I’m still learning, still growing, and expanding my business year after year. And I’m excited about what’s next. I’m getting ready to launch a new venture focused on coaching and supporting new and struggling agents — those who want to learn the real “secret sauce” of how to find listings, build relationships, and thrive in this industry.
It’s called The Realest Discipline — and it blends real estate fundamentals with personal development, accountability, and mindset work. My goal is to help agents shorten the learning curve, gain confidence, and build a business (and life) they’re proud of.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
1. Maintaining Consistency While Scaling
I’ve tried very hard to build momentum through discipline, prospecting, self-development, and client care…
but as your business grows, so does the complexity.
The challenge now is maintaining the same level of consistency and quality even as your responsibilities multiply.
2. Staying Ahead in a Rapidly Changing Market
Commercial real estate shifts fast — interest rates, inventory levels, investment sentiment, tenant demand, and economic cycles constantly evolve.
Remaining educated, strategic, and calm in uncertainty takes real discipline.
3. Serving Clients at a High Level Without Losing Life Balance
I care deeply about being reliable, responsive, prepared, and professional.
But that level of commitment can require a lot of attention. So I intentionally make time for family life, health routines, and personal downtime.
Not sure i’ll ever Find the perfect balance and stay there but fighting for the right balance is a constant, intentional practice.
