Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Goldstein.
Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated law school in 2010 from the University of Baltimore School of Law. My first job out of law school was for the federal government. I started with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) by helping them to implement the Affordable Care Act which was signed into law in 2010. It was an interesting first job out of law school and I met many dedicated people who were passionate about expanding access to health care to more Americans.
Starting in 2017 I decided to expand my horizons by volunteering mainly for the pro bono resource center of Maryland. I was trained to prepare basic estate planing documents for low income seniors. I enjoyed the work and volunteered for them for several years. They provided training, mentorship and covered my malpractice insurance.
When COVID hit in 2020 I had more time on my hands and decided to open a private practice in estate planning part time. It started with word of mouth and I got the word out by writing articles on the topic in local publications.
Over the past five years the business has taken off and at this point I enjoy helping clients with probate, estate planning and some corporate issues as well. I have built a network of referral partners with CPAs, financial advisors, banks and other professionals. I have also built up my website and get referrals from consumers finding me on google and the like.
I have taken on a leadership role by serving on the section council for the Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA) for the section on Elderlaw and Disability Rights. I continue to seek out professional development opportunities and networking opportunities. I have also developed several mentor relationships with more senior attorneys which has helped me grow in my knowledge base and experience.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Setting up your own practice has definitely had its set of challenges as many of the things I needed to learn were not taught formally in law school. I have learned a lot on the job and by experience. I am also grateful to the legal community for their willingness to help and mentor me when needed.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Michael R. Goldstein, Esquire LLC ?
I own a law firm that specializes in estate planning, probate, and some elder law issues. I help clients plan for the inevitable reality that we all may get sick at some point and life does come to an end for all of us. My goal is to make the process as smooth as possible for clients. I try to connect with my clients personally and keep things as simple as possible. I have been told that I am easy to deal with and that puts my clients at ease.
I think what sets me apart from others is my desire to connect and take care of my clients and to get them to trust me. I think a lot of finding a good estate planning attorney besides technical knowledge is the connection that you develop with them. I have built a lot of positive relationships with clients and they are grateful for my expertise and work.
What’s next?
I hope to continue to grow my practice and branch out further as time and opportunity allows.
