Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisa Kahn.
Hi Marisa , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Symmetry Salon Studios, a Maryland-born small business founded in 2013 by local industry veterans. Over the past decade, we’ve grown organically to seven staffed locations across the DMV, with the majority in Maryland—including our newest location in Baltimore.
More than a salon space, this location is a thriving community of women-owned and minority-owned beauty and wellness businesses, each building their own independent brand under one roof. What sets Symmetry apart is that we staff every location daily, ensuring that our community members receive consistent support, guidance, and a safe, professional environment to grow their businesses.
A few angles that may be of particular interest:
A local success story: Symmetry began as a single Maryland-based concept in 2013 and has grown to nine privately owned and operated studios (7 Symmetry’s and 2 MODA’s).
A hub for entrepreneurship: Our Baltimore studio houses independent stylists, estheticians, braiders, and wellness professionals— plus we have first-time business owners across all of our locations.
Women & minority empowerment: The majority of our tenants are women and minorities building generational wealth and economic mobility through entrepreneurship.
Daily on-site support: Unlike typical studio-rental models, Symmetry employs staff at each location to provide hands-on assistance, community support, and operational consistency for every business owner.
Community economic impact: By empowering independent professionals, Symmetry strengthens Baltimore’s small business ecosystem and contributes to neighborhood economic growth.
A window into the modern beauty economy: As the industry shifts toward independent ownership, Symmetry offers a model for equitable, accessible, and sustainable entrepreneurship.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For both Symmetry and MODA’s growth the road to success has been paved by our industry professionals who are partners in our ownership as well as operate their own beauty or wellness business in one of our studios. These professionals are able to support and coach new entrepreneurs into their own success within one of our locations.
We’ve been impressed with Symmetry Salon Studios, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Marisa joined Symmetry Salon Studios in 2014 as both an equity partner and owner/operator of her own skincare business in a studio at Symmetry Bethesda. Since then, she grew her own practice to over six-figures per year, as well as being instrumental in Symmetry’s growth from one location to where it is today. Currently, she serves as COO and VP of Marketing for Symmetry and MODA. Marisa is present in each location on rotation and supports our regional team as well as our front desk teams.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Long family dinners starting with hours in the kitchen together preparing the meal, then sitting around the table for even more hours laughing together, sharing, and enjoying one another.
