Meet Tiffany Lewis of Pet and Home Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Lewis.

Hi Tiffany, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey with Pet and Home Care started when I was a teenager with a genuine love for animals and an entrepreneurial spark I didn’t even realize I had yet. What began as walking dogs and caring for neighbors’ pets quickly grew into something more — I saw how much people relied on trustworthy, consistent support. That early understanding became the foundation for Pet and Home Care.

I officially launched the company when I was 18, and I spent years building it client by client and team member by team member. As demand grew, I expanded our services from pet sitting and dog walking to daycare, boarding, and home cleaning. I learned to lead by doing — every role, every challenge, every late-night problem to solve helped me shape the company we are today.

A major part of our growth came from recognizing opportunities to bring high-quality local services under one umbrella. Over the years, I’ve acquired six of our competitors — each one a strategic step that allowed us to expand our reach, welcome talented teams, and serve more families without compromising on care. The most recent acquisition, The Green K9 in Urbana, MD has been especially meaningful. It not only strengthened our presence but also aligned perfectly with our vision to offer a truly whole pet approach.

Today, Pet and Home Care is more than a service provider — we’re a comprehensive pet wellness ecosystem. From daily care and grooming to nutrition, enrichment, and a thoughtfully curated retail experience, our goal is to support the entire well-being of every pet we serve. We’ve grown significantly over the years, but we’ve stayed grounded in the mission that started it all: exceptional care for pets and genuine peace of mind for the people who love them.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not — but every challenge has made us stronger and more adaptable. Over the past two decades, Pet and Home Care has lived through nearly every major economic and national disruption you can imagine. I started the company just before the 9/11 tragedy, and the ripple effects of that moment were felt across small businesses everywhere. Since then, we’ve navigated recessions, a global pandemic, rising operational costs, tariff impacts, supply chain volatility, labor shortages, and even government shutdowns.

The rising costs of both supplies and labor have been especially challenging. Everything from pet food and grooming products to cleaning supplies and equipment has increased sharply in price. At the same time, competitive wages, employee support, and retention have become more crucial than ever — and more expensive. Balancing financial sustainability with a commitment to fair pay and high-quality care has required constant creativity.

One of the most significant lessons I learned early on was that Independent Contractors simply weren’t the right structure for professional pet care. We needed consistency, accountability, and a strong team culture, and you can’t build that with contractors. Transitioning to W2 employees was a major restructuring effort — legally, financially, and operationally — but it ultimately elevated our service quality and created a more stable foundation for growth.

Despite all the ups and downs, we’ve always come out stronger. Each challenge pushed us to refine our systems, improve communication, strengthen our leadership, and build a company rooted in resilience and integrity. The road has been anything but smooth, but it has absolutely shaped who we are today — a trusted, steady, compassionate partner for pets and the people who love them.

We’ve been impressed with Pet and Home Care, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Pet and Home Care is a trusted, full-service pet care company that has been part of the Maryland community for almost three decades. We support families in Montgomery and Frederick counties with a comprehensive range of services — dog walking, in-home pet sitting, grooming, retail, enrichment, training partnerships, home care, and more. Our mission is simple: to make life easier and happier for both pets and their people.

What truly defines us is our Tip-to-Tail Care approach. We believe pets deserve complete, well-rounded support — not just one-off services. That means everything from daily exercise and dependable routines to nutrition, wellness, enrichment, socialization, grooming, and more. Our services and retail offerings are deliberately designed to work together to support every aspect of a pet’s well-being.

The recent acquisition of The Green K9 has allowed us to elevate this whole-pet philosophy even further. Our Frederick location has become a hub for premium nutrition, eco-friendly products, grooming, enrichment-style daycare, and personalized guidance for pet parents who want the best for their companions. This expansion represents our evolution from a pet care company into a full ecosystem dedicated to total pet wellness.

We’re also known for our high standards and professionalism. Unlike many companies in our industry, we employ trained and background-checked W2 employees — not independent contractors. Having a real team ensures consistency, reliability, accountability, and a culture of care that extends from our staff to our clients’ homes.

And one of the things I’m most proud of is our Service Guarantee. We stand behind every service we provide. If something isn’t right, we fix it — period. That level of commitment builds trust, and trust is the foundation of every long-term client relationship we have.

Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is the reputation we’ve earned: dependable, compassionate, professional, and always evolving to meet the needs of our community. For your readers, the takeaway is this — whether you need help once in a while or every day, whether your pet needs exercise, grooming, nutrition support, or a full wellness plan, Pet and Home Care is here to provide thoughtful, consistent, and truly exceptional care from tip to tail.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Absolutely. One of the biggest game changers in my professional journey was graduating from the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program. It gave me tools and insights that fundamentally strengthened how I lead and grow my company. I gained valuable skills in finance, strategy, leadership, and operations, and I connected with an incredible network of fellow small business owners. What makes the program so special is that it doesn’t end when you graduate — you become part of an ongoing national community built specifically for small businesses. We truly are the backbone of the economy, and it means so much that Goldman Sachs and Bloomberg Philanthropies recognized that and created such an impactful program. I’m a proud alum and ambassador, and I encourage every small business owner to explore it.

In addition to that, I’ve always invested in high-level coaching. Working with expert business coaches like Bella Vasta over the years has broadened my perspective and pushed me to grow not just as a CEO, but as a leader, communicator, and strategist. Having someone who challenges your thinking and keeps you accountable is invaluable.

As for ongoing resources, I’m a believer in continuous learning. I regularly follow industry blogs, leadership podcasts, small business publications, and operational tools that help me stay sharp. Apps that support organization, project management, and communication. I also love books that focus on leadership, team culture, and operational excellence, because those themes drive everything we do at Pet and Home Care.

At the end of the day, I believe the best leaders are lifelong students. Whether it’s structured education, coaching, reading, or staying connected with other entrepreneurs, I’m always looking for new ways to learn, improve, and bring fresh ideas to my business and my team.
