Today we’d like to introduce you to Altyn.
Hi Altyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
La Bohemia Bakery is a woman-owned small business that was established in 2014, when our owner moved to the USA from Europe. It specializes in providing its customers with freshly baked goods, which are all-natural and organic, as well as baked from local products using authentic recipes from France, the Czech Republic and other European countries. Several years in a row, it participates in various events in DC area organized by European embassies. La Bohemia Bakery is also a proud partner and donor of a women’s shelter in Rockville, MD.
While our main kitchen is in Rockville, in 2017 we opened Baltimore for ourselves, when we had learned about “the biggest farmers market in Maryland” that is the Baltimore Farmers’ Market at E Saratoga St & Holliday Streets on Sundays. The market introduced us to the city and its community, while we introduced our Baltimore customers to the best traditions of the European pastry and baking. Since 2019, we are also glad to serve the 32nd Street Farmers Market community. We were introduced to this market by our customers from Baltimore Sunday market who live in Waverly area and who were complaining that La Bohemia Bakery was not in Baltimore during the winter season (since Baltimore Sunday market is closed over winter). Since then, we became a part of the 32nd Street Farmers Market community and managed to win even bigger customer base in the area. We are looking forward to continue our services in Baltimore.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of our biggest challenges is to provide the same quality baked goods for an affordable price, which is our main motto. Whenever it is possible, we try to use local products as our ingredients. However, in order to get the authentic taste we have to import certain ingredients from Europe, mainly France. With increased tariffs for imported goods and with ongoing inflation, it is becoming more challenging than ever. Despite that, we are determined to continue serve our communities and satisfy our customers in their quest for European taste in the USA.
