Hidden Gems: Meet John Dukes of John Dukes Photography LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Dukes.

Hi John, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Hello, yes of course! My name is John Dukes, and I’m the owner of John Dukes Photography LLC, based in Mount Airy, Maryland. I’m a professional portrait and wedding photographer, and I also have a deep love for landscape, wildlife, travel, and cityscape photography.

I’m a U.S. Navy veteran and retired from Verizon Communications after a wonderful 25-year career. Photography has always been a part of my life,. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a camera in my hand, trying to capture the beauty of the world and people around me. But it wasn’t until about ten years ago that I decided to take that lifelong passion and turn it into a profession.

What truly drew me in was discovering the power of light and how it can transform a simple scene into something extraordinary and evoke emotion in ways words can’t. Once I understood how light could tell a story all on its own, I was completely hooked and eager to learn everything I could about the artistic side of photography and how to draw out emotions from people who view my work.

I have a deep love for nature, celebrations and people, and the how it all comes together in this beautiful world we inhabit. There’s beauty everywhere! It’s in a glowing sunrise over Yosemite, in the delicate details of a flower, in a couple’s laughter after saying “I do,” or in the pure joy of a child’s smile. For me, photography is about telling stories through life’s most meaningful moments.

If something makes me happy and brings joy to others, I want to photograph it. That’s what keeps me passionate about what I do. Every day to me is a gift, and I I love capturing those beautiful slices of life – big or small – that remind us how wonderful this world really is.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like most creative journeys, it definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. When I first started photographing professionally, there was a huge learning curve. Not to mention a serious financial investment! Between the cost of gear, running a portrait studio, and learning the technical side of shooting and editing, it felt like there was so much to take in all at once.

I also had to learn how to run a business. Suddenly, I was faced with tasks like handling the administrative side, marketing myself, finding clients, and building relationships. Much of that was completely new to me, and at times it really felt like sink or swim.

There were moments of self-doubt too – times when I wondered if I was good enough or if people would value what I created, especially when I compared my work to some of the incredible photographers I’d admired over the years. I had big dreams, and sometimes they felt so far off and unreachable. But each challenge taught me something important: patience, persistence, and the value of staying true to my own vision and style were the keys to getting where I longed to be.

One thing that truly helped me along the way was my love for people and my passion for relationships. I began networking and building friendships with amazing photographers in the industry, learning directly from some of the best in the world. I’m now so happy to say that many photographers I once looked up to are now people I consider friends from all around the globe.

My dear friend Scott Kelby and the team at KelbyOne LLC in Tampa, FL, played a huge role in that growth. KelbyOne is one of the greatest places in the world to learn photography, and the network of people and instructors (the KelbyOne Community) are truly some of the friendliest and most welcoming people I’ve ever known. I joined KelbyOne early on and dove in like a sponge, soaking up everything I could about photography and lighting while building friendships with some of the greatest photographers in the industry.

I never imagined I’d one day be meeting and shooting alongside legendary photographers like Joe McNally, Rick Sammon, Jefferson Graham, and so many others. Those dreams I once thought were unreachable slowly started becoming real.

Fast forward to today, and I’m honored and privileged to now be a KelbyOne Instructor myself. It still feels a bit surreal to be on the other side – teaching, encouraging, and inspiring others who are where I was not long ago, just starting out. It’s a full-circle moment that reminds me how far passion and persistence can truly take you.

Looking back, I’m actually grateful for the bumps in the road. Each challenge, and each person who pushed me to improve, helped me grow, keep learning, and never lose that same excitement I felt when I first discovered the power of light and storytelling through photography.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Well, first and foremost, my wife Tracy is an essential part of the John Dukes Photography story. She’s not only the love of my life but also a very talented photographer herself. Tracy is incredibly creative! She has a natural gift for working with children and newborns and an amazing eye for design. She brings our studio to life, especially during birthdays, holidays, and special events, creating a space that feels warm, inviting, and beautiful.

Together, we focus on creating meaningful moments and telling stories through authentic, heartfelt imagery. We specialize in portrait photography, including weddings, families, couples, newborns, seniors, graduations, and professional headshots, but we also share a deep love for landscape, cityscape, travel, wildlife, and fine art photography. Traveling to new places and capturing the beauty of the world together has become one of our favorite creative adventures.

What truly sets us apart, I believe, is the personal connection we build with people. We take the time to get to know our clients. They mean everything to us! We want to know and understand what matters most to them, so we can create images that genuinely reflect their personalities and emotions. Whether it’s a family laughing together, a couple celebrating their love, or a professional looking for that perfect headshot, our goal is for everyone who steps in front of our camera to feel comfortable, confident, and seen.

I’m also really proud of how our brand has grown to represent both sides of what we love: the portrait work that captures life’s milestones and the fine art photography that celebrates the beauty of the world around us. Through johndukesart.com, Tracy and I share our collection of landscape, cityscape, and travel images as fine art prints for homes and offices, a way to bring a little piece of that beauty into everyday life. Itis humbling to know that my photography work is hanging up on the walls of businesses, homes, and even restaurants, all arouind the globe!

At the end of the day, our mission is simple: to create images that make people happy, tell their story, and become cherished memories for years to come.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Without a doubt, my connection with people, and my genuine love for people, are the key ingredients to our success.

Make no mistake, taking beautiful photographs and understanding light, composition, and technical details are all important. But at the heart of it all, it’s about the people. Our clients mean everything to us, and delighting each and every one of them is absolutely paramount to our success.

The reason people return to us time and time again, and refer their family and friends, is because we treat every single client as if they’re our only one. We take the time to listen, to connect, and to make them feel valued.

At the end of the day, without our customers, there is no business. They’re not just subjects in front of our camera. They’re the reason we do what we do.
