Maria N. Listman shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Maria N., we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
My art. It’s hard to explain, but time seems to not exist when I’m creating with my hands or writing. I get in this flow, and everything around me fades into the background. My phone gets ignored, I turn up the music and fully concentrate on what’s in front of me. Making art keeps me in the moment, and that’s truly where we’re meant to be.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Maria N. Listman and I’m an artist and writer who’s following her heart’s desires. I love to split my creative time between the seaside and the field by creating coastal art and also interviewing farmers about their best practices and grit.
Through my art business, Blue Skies and Salt, I make one of a kind beach-inspired pieces that celebrate the beauty and calm of the coastline. My passion for agriculture led me to start Blue Skies and Grit, where I highlight a farmer’s resilience and hard work. Whether I’m creating art or connecting with our local farmers, my work centers around creativity, community and the beauty in everyday life.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Such a good question! I was painfully shy as a child. I thought my shyness meant that I didn’t have much to say, and I had a hard time expressing myself. As I got older, I was placed in certain roles that made me step out of that shy little bubble. I had to find my voice, and become a leader. Over the years, my confidence has grown, and I credit God for nudging me into situations that made me rise above my fears. That shy little girl still exists, and I absolutely love that part of myself – it’s where my sensitivity and creativity took shape. But I also know that I can be bold and brave and have no issue with sticking my neck out to try new things.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering is a truth teller. If you want to see what you’re truly made of, walk through something hard. Success can be applause, recognition, a buzzy balm that all is well. It’s comfort. Suffering can be refinement. They’re both special and important.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m committed to adding more beauty into the world through art and storytelling – whether it’s a conversation with a local farmer, a custom made piece of sea-inspired art, or the colors that I bring to a painting. All of these little bits are meant to inspire people to pause, appreciate and find joy in the everyday.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
You bet I am! Bringing that kind of energy to my day makes all the difference. My art and agriculture passion projects are currently part-time, but that doesn’t stop me from approaching every task with a fun-loving attitude, and a sense of excitement for what’s to come.
I get to talk to some of the most important people in our country – local farmers. I walk their pastures, meet their families and see firsthand how much grit they have to feed the American population. I go behind the scenes and learn so much – what a blessing! Then I head to my studio and create joyful, vibrant pieces of art to share with my community. I love working with my hands; God designed me that way. I don’t just tap dance to work, I sing at the top of my lungs and celebrate my day as much as possible!
