Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?

We actually started in the industry about 12 years ago while working full-time in hotels. During that time, We began taking on small residential painting jobs part-time, mostly through word-of-mouth, and quickly realized there was a real demand for reliable, detail-oriented contractors — especially ones who treated clients’ homes with care and professionalism.
Eventually, what started as a side hustle grew into a full-service operation, and today Visions of Color is a fully licensed home improvement company serving Maryland and D.C. We’re a small Black-owned business, and one thing we take pride in is that we create opportunities for skill-based tradesmen — especially individuals who may just need a second chance to rebuild their careers.
Now, we handle everything from interior and exterior painting to full renovations,
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Entrepreneurship—especially in this current economy—comes with constant challenges. One of the biggest obstacles has been finding reliable and consistent talent. That’s actually what led us to start our own in-house training approach. We don’t necessarily need someone with years of experience — we value work ethic, consistency, and willingness to learn.
Another struggle has been gaining access to larger contracts and opportunities. As a small Black-owned business, you really have to work twice as hard to be seen and prove yourself in bigger spaces. But those challenges have also made us extremely resourceful and committed to building a strong, dependable reputation.

Our motto is ‘5 stars — never 4.9.’ We hold ourselves to a standard of excellence, and that shows up in everything from our communication to the final walk-through. Our clients aren’t just transactions — we truly treat them like family. We take the time to understand their vision, protect their home, and deliver work that speaks for itself long after we leave. Our goal is always to create an experience where the client is proud to refer us before we even ask.
