Today we’d like to introduce you to Magdalena Ukonu.
Hi Magdalena, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey in accounting began over ten years ago. Because my education was completed abroad, the path to becoming a CPA took longer than expected — I needed to complete additional college coursework to qualify for the exam. At work, I eagerly took on new projects and opportunities to expand my skills. As I gained experience and completed my studies, I was proud to pass the CPA exam, which soon led to a well-earned promotion.
Through this experience, I developed a deeper appreciation for the difference that attentive, high-quality accounting can make. I also noticed that many external accounting services often lacked the personal care and precision clients truly deserve. This realization inspired me to take a new step — launching my own bookkeeping business to provide businesses with a more thoughtful, hands-on, and client-focused approach.
Building a new business while continuing my professional career has been both challenging and rewarding. I’m learning every day, from marketing my services to connecting with clients who value accuracy, trust, and genuine partnership. My goal is to continue growing a practice that reflects these values and helps clients feel supported every step of the way.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a new business is never smooth. Learning new skill like IT and marketing is challenging. My biggest struggles so far are to reach new clients and advertise my business.
As you know, we’re big fans of GAT Accounting and Advisory LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I specialize in bookkeeping, financial statement preparation, and audit support for small and medium-sized businesses. I approach every client with empathy and dedication, treating each business as if it were my own. My goal is to help business owners make sense of their numbers, gain clarity, and build the confidence they need to grow and thrive.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My greatest supporters and source of motivation are my kids. I want to set an example for them — to show that any goal they set for themselves can be achieved with wise work and perseverance. I also draw inspiration from motivational speakers and find encouragement in spending time with successful family members, which fuels my drive to become more than just an employee and to build something of my own.
