An Inspired Chat with 5K Visions of East Baltimore

We recently had the chance to connect with 5K Visions and have shared our conversation below.

5K, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What battle are you avoiding?
A lot of times as an artist, creative, entrepreneur, or just a person going day to day you face many hardships and battles. One of the most common battles in my opinion that many face and I also myself struggle with, is the battle you fight against yourself. Many times people come into a wall that they just seem to can’t get around, but most of the time that battle mirrors the environment surrounding the person. I find myself fighting and avoiding an uphill battle with the “norm’s” of society trying to figure out if it makes me irregular since I don’t submit to the general view.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Shawn Porter, but I’ve mostly gone by and have been known as 5k or five for my brand. I wouldn’t just say it’s photography that I’m doing, its more so story telling and capturing a certain stillness that emerges the audience into certain visuals.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I believe a lot of the time the bond between people is broken with disagreement. Now this can easily be solved and restored with conversation if both parties are willing to compromise and sacrifice in the time of need. but I also believe that with conversation and exchange of like minds this is what ultimately tells any person if the crowd or specific person is for that said individual.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Definitely, it was a time where I knew nobody was coming for me and that’s when I started to grow my relationship closer with God.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
one hundred percent me. A lot of people tell me i wear my emotions on my sleeve and I’m not Afraid of who I am or the message I want to get across.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That he loved people and their stories for being authentic and that he cherished every memory or encounter he had with anybody.
