An Inspired Chat with Khalida B

We recently had the chance to connect with Khalida B and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Khalida, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Lately, I feel like I’m being called to stop shrinking. To speak louder. To share my story, my lessons, and my light, even when my voice shakes. For years, I knew I had a gift with words and inspiring people, but fear of how I’d be perceived held me back. The more I ran from it, the more it followed me, until I surrendered. This year, I chose to step into my calling, to speak and inspire without fear, and to walk in my purpose no matter who’s watching

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Khalida Bafalie, founder of KhalidaNaturals, a beauty brand made by a kinky girl, for kinky girls. I was born in Liberia and started my business in my mother’s kitchen with just $100. Today, KhalidaNaturals celebrates the beauty of Type 4 hair with products that actually work from edge control to growth products, all made with love and honesty. My mission is simple: to empower women and girls with kinky hair to feel confident, seen, and proud of their roots.
Right now, I’m focused on scaling KhalidaNaturals into beauty supply stores nationwide and expanding our edge control line into a full styling system. It’s an exciting chapter , one rooted in purpose, passion, and proof that you can build something extraordinary from the smallest beginning.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I was soft yet bold, a girl who dreamed without limits and loved without fear. I spoke my truth freely, created just because it made me happy, and believed that anything was possible. I started dimming my light to fit in. Life taught me to tone it down, to be “realistic,” to move carefully. But I’m unlearning that now, returning to the version of me that was free before she was filtered.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
After years of working from my mom’s kitchen, then my apartment, and later my dad’s basement, I finally opened my first KhalidaNaturals storefront. It felt like a dream come true, a milestone I’d prayed for. But shortly after opening, we ran into serious financial difficulties and had to close the store. I was devastated. I felt like I’d failed. I was angry at myself, even at God. For a moment, I truly lost hope and questioned everything, But looking back, I’m so grateful I didn’t give up. That season taught me resilience, discipline, and faith in ways success never could. It reminded me why I started KhalidaNaturals in the first place, not just to have a store, but to build a movement. That pain planted the seeds for the version of me and my brand you see today.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
I’d say yes, but she’s the stronger, more refined version of me. The public version of me is real, but it’s also the part that’s learned how to stand tall through everything I’ve faced. I don’t fake who I am, but I do protect my peace. The real me still feels fear, still questions things, still heals in private. What you see publicly is the woman I’ve become through those private moments, the version that chooses to show up anyway.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I think people may misunderstand my legacy as being just about beauty or business, when in reality, it’s always been about self-love and confidence. Everything I create, from products to content ,is rooted in helping people, especially women, remember their worth. My story isn’t just about hair or skincare; it’s about reminding others that they’re already enough. My legacy is about healing, growth, and showing up as your full, authentic self, even when the world tries to make you shrink.
