An Inspired Chat with Mrs. Melanin Reigns of Baltimore city

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mrs. Melanin Reigns . Check out our conversation below.

Hi Mrs. Melanin, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Have you stood up for someone when it cost you something?
Many people aren’t aware of this because it’s something I’ve held close to my chest, but for about 5 years now I’ve been fighting to keep my daughter safe.

This journey has cost me almost everything. The details of the story are very complex but it has taught me so much about the family court system, lack of protection of women and children and how children are viewed as property.

It’s never ideal to fight against the other parent but in severe cases like ours, I’ve had to put my life and livelihood on the line. Day in and day out, it drains me on so many levels but my love and protection as a mother knows no limits.

I know that a breakthrough is near despite the odds being stacked “against” me.

My little one has been worth doing the right thing, even when others aren’t assisting or listening.

I’m breaking the silence and releasing the shame because it is not mine to carry.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Mrs. Melanin Reigns—a storyteller, creator, and visionary who wears many crowns with pride. What makes me unique is the way I weave all the layers of who I am into everything I do: my artistry, my community work, and my ability to turn ideas into powerful experiences.

Through my brand, Melanin Reigns Essentials, I create intentional pieces that celebrate authenticity, beauty, and legacy. But my artistry doesn’t stop there—I write, I produce, I design, and I build platforms like Melanin in Bloom that amplify voices and honor stories that matter. Every facet of my work reflects my passion for culture, empowerment, and creating spaces where others can see themselves reign too.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The part of me that has served its purpose and must now be released is the version of myself that felt I had to carry everything and everyone, even at the cost of my own peace. That season taught me resilience, responsibility, and strength, but it also kept me from fully embracing ease, joy, and flow. I’m releasing the weight of over-giving and stepping into a space where my boundaries, my artistry, and my voice are honored, because that’s where I truly reign.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be: “You don’t have to shrink to make others comfortable, your light was never meant to be dimmed. Trust that your voice, your creativity, and your presence will open doors you can’t even imagine yet. Keep being bold, because everything that makes you different is exactly what makes you powerful.”

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
A project I’m committed to, no matter how long it takes, is Melanin in Bloom. It’s not just about creating something beautiful, it’s about telling the truths that often go unspoken, especially around Black motherhood. Too often, our stories are silenced, our struggles are dismissed, and our beauty is overlooked. From the alarming pregnancy mortality rates among Black women, to the lack of representation in medical research, to the resources we should have but don’t, there’s so much that needs to be brought to light.

Melanin in Bloom is my way of holding space for both the beauty and the challenges, the joy of creating life, the resilience it takes to mother in systems not built for us, and the sacredness of passing down legacy. I also want to break the silence around those unspoken conversations that so many mothers hold back out of fear of shame or judgment. By creating this project, I’m saying: your story matters, your voice matters, and your existence is worthy of being seen and honored.

With the help of some amazing creators like Thomas of Stitch House Studios, Dionne Halsey of 1513 promotions and some beautifully amazing models, we are bringing awareness in a powerful way.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I’m gone, I hope people tell the story of a woman who loved deeply, created boldly, and used her gifts to uplift others. I want them to say that I didn’t just chase dreams for myself, but I built spaces where others could see themselves reflected and celebrated. Most of all, I want my legacy to be that I spoke life, into my daughter, into my community, into every project I touched, and that my reign wasn’t about power, but about planting seeds that continue to bloom long after me.
