She Toyin Alade shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Toyin, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What battle are you avoiding?
I recently lost my best friend/brand ambassador on July 3rd of last month. Times are hard now..just facing reality and trying to keep the momentum going.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Im Toyin, a 22 year old entrepreneur that owns a clothing brand and also in the medical field as a medical assistant. My brand “No Expectation” is to remind others to never expect too much of anything from anyone to avoid disappointment. In life I have always put people first and just expected them to reciprocate what’s being brought to them genuinely, but it never failed I would always end up being disappointed and just sit there contemplating on how I could have done something differently. Im currently working on making my brand bigger/better, networking and working towards the goal to have the world already hip to “No Expectation”, having a mobile store to tour the world with my own clothing, and of course helping the less fortunate and my city.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I always told myself or thought to myself that I don’t like to try new things in general… well as I grew up that has definitely not been the case. Now I actually embrace change and force myself into something new every time I feel stuck or overwhelmed on the same thing.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, in 2021 I got in a car accident on my birthday 10/18. I spoke about this before I believe but that was one of the times I almost gave up on everything. I felt like I lost everything literally everything.. I couldn’t work, eat the same or just do the regular things I was able to do prior to the accident but I didn’t let it break me and I’m still pushing. Thank God
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I feel like they would say My business and my family. Thats where I put my all and time into those 2 things.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
The meaning of my brand name “No Expectation”, I say that because agreed it can make you think “why wouldn’t I have any expectations” or “I would want to have goals to achieve” as most people would ask or say. I see it as this I’m not a saying you shouldn’t have goals in life because trust I have a lot of goals in mind I’m currently trying to achieve and will, but Im also a person who put my trust in and respect people a lot more than I should have if that makes sense. I drained myself expecting a lot from certain people or even little things as in games, “mysterious” tv shows, etc.
